Hi I'm Phil

I grew up in the Arizona deserts. I am a curious physicist, an engineer and a father of five. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have always loved learning about our world and universe. My children know when dad takes control of the television, it is officially science time. My degree is in physics and I am a registered civil engineer and land surveyor. I love alternate energy topics and trends. I see evidence of a master designer in the world around me, from the billions of base nucleotide pairings in our DNA to the perfectly tuned physical laws that control our expanding universe.

Why I am a Mormon

I remember reading the Book of Mormon in my youth. I remember the particular feelings, the deep emotions that moved and touched my spirit, then and now. I embrace the duality I see in life, the physical and the spiritual. I see no conflict in relying on both the scientific method for exploring the physical world around us and relying on the Holy Spirit for evidences relating to our spiritual natures. A good scientist will never disregard good data. I see so much evidence all around us that support a higher power. As George Cannon said regarding the Book of Mormon, “No wicked man could write such a book as this; and no good man would write it, unless it were true and he were commanded of God to do so.” I agree with this statement, it makes good sense to me. The Book of Mormon to me is more than a second witness of God, it is evidence of His love, it is a spiritual guide for our lives. How perfect is it that our lives comprise not only the physical, but also the spiritual? These two together make us who we are, make us human and the children of God.

How I live my faith

I have enjoyed working with the youth of my congregations over the years. I have hiked and swam with them. I have fished and rock climbed with them, water skied, snow skied, mountain biked, and white water rafted, stood on mountain peaks and climbed deep into caverns with them. All these activities have provided opportunities to express how I feel about God's creations. I have been able to teach how rich our lives can be as we help each other pass through life's challenges together.
