Hi I'm Gary

I'm a Mormon. I have lived all my life in the Seattle-Tacoma area.

About Me

Barb and I got engaged while at the university in Seattle. I was a math major but wanted to combine that with sales instead of engineering or teaching. I began my career in the insurance business, first in sales then sales training, then wholesale marketing to banks and stock firms. I spent many years as a seminar speaker on investment tax shelters. My last 20 years of employment was as a mortgage banker. We have 7 children and 5 grandchildren plus 3 step grandchildren and 6 step great-grandchildren. Barb died of cancer in July 2011. I love camping and traveling with my family. Genealogy has been a hobby for many years.

Why I am a Mormon

We started our quest to find a church that we could get rooted in, as our Christian backgrounds were "good" in church attendance but "weak" in doctrine. We attended many big name churches during our 18 month engagement but came away still searching. After our wedding we set up our first home in Burien Washington. We were given a book about the church for Christmas "Meet the Mormons" and I was taken with the story of the First Vision and Barb finally found an explanation of Father, Son and Holy Ghost that made sense to her. A sweet spirit came over us and I knew we needed to know more. I asked a Mormon at work when church was in the local chapel, he didn't know but said he would fine out. I thought he must not be active in church but later found out that he was the Stake President of a different Stake. The missionaries came by that evening and set up a meeting with us for Saturday evening. Saturday came along with a heavy snow, but the missionaries came and brought that same sweet spirit into our little apartment. I didn't know what that spirit was, but we wanted it in our lives. The next day being Sunday we went to church and meet many loving families. It was Testimony Sunday where members stood and testified how the church and Jesus Christ had blessed their lives. That same sweet spirit was there again, so strong that we knew our search was over, we had found that "pearl of great price."

How I live my faith

We have served the church in many ways throughout our now 46 years. Barb helped and presided over youth, teens and adult women organizations. She helped in Family History Centers and taught classes on many subjects. She computerized over 250,000 names from old records so others could find their ancestors. I have served as a teacher and trainer for many years on the local (branch and ward) as well as the larger Stake level and, more recently, at the Temple. But the most rewarding teaching and training took place in our home. A home filled with love, prayer and scripture study. A home of wholesome games and family entertainment, all to prepare our children for families of their own. My most precious possession is a testimony of Jesus Christ as creator, Savior, and law giver. His atonement makes up for all my short comings and enables me to be forgiven through repentance. The gifts he as given me at baptism and in the Temple have given me an eternal family with my wife and children "sealed" to me forever. This sealing is more real than ever now that Barb has gone on ahead and received her reward for a faithful righteous life.
