Hi I'm Mike

I am a suburban paternal commando, self-trained in the arts of fathering and husbandry. And, I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a proud father of two boys and two girls, and husband to a wonderful wife I don't nearly deserve. I work in commercial real estate and love college football.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because its teachings have answered life's three most important questions for me with clarity: 1. Where did I come from? 2. Why am I here? and 3. Where am I going? The answers to these questions are laid out in beautiful simplicity in our Heavenly Father's Plan of Salvation, which has been taught to mankind by a loving Heavenly Father, through prophets over time, and recorded in scripture. The teachings of the church focus on the role of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and how we can better apply those teachings in our lives. As I have tried to live according to the teachings of Christ in my own life, I have felt my love for others (especially my wife and kids) increase, my ability to handle adversity increase, and I have become a more selfless person. Life's burdens have definitely become lighter for me as a result of making the Savior a focal point in my life. I love being a member of this church...in addition to enlightening me on the all important topics mentioned above, it gives me opportunities to serve others and grow personally. I love the Savior and strive to someday be just like Him.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by simply trying to be a good person. Although i fall short constantly, I try to be like Jesus by helping others and thinking of others' needs before my own. Being married and raising kids gives me many opportunities to live the gospel of Jesus Christ through small, consistent acts of service. Living for others has been a recipe for happiness for me. I currently serve as a counselor to the Bishop of our local congregation. I have also been assigned families in our congregation to help when needed. My favorite job in the church has been as a an early morning seminary teacher for high school aged kids, where we discussed the Bible and Book of Mormon every day for an hour before their school day. My most important job continues to be as a husband to my wife, and father to my kids. That's where the fun really is!

Why do Mormon missionaries proselyte?

In short, and as a former missionary myself in the countries of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Belarus, we feel we have something to share. We feel that our message about God's plan for us is so important, and potentially life changing (for the better!), we are willing to sacrifice other life priorities like education, dating, social lives, and professional pursuits to share this message. I decided to serve as a missionary because the teachings of this church had truly brought peace, joy, and perspective to my life, and I wanted others to have that too. Show more Show less

Why was a Restoration of the Gospel needed? Haven’t we always had the Bible?

The Bible can, and has been, interpreted many different ways, as evidenced by the many different Christian denominations adhere to it. They can't all be right at the same time. We believe that God wants us to know the truth and not be confused about his nature, his Son, or our purpose here on earth. Thus, it was necessary for God to resume his pattern of revealing his truth and doctrines to mankind through the calling of prophets and their recording of scripture. This was His pattern for revealing truth in the past, is how we got the Bible, and I think it makes perfect sense that he would resume it, and not let the world stay confused. I personally love the Bible and its teachings. The symbolism of the Old Testament is fascinating to me, points to the coming of a Savior, and perfectly sets the stage for the coming of the Savior into the world. The New Testament is the only place where I can read about what Jesus actually did here during his time on earth. His apostles' testimonies of his divinity and resurrection speak to my soul. The Book of Mormon is another compilation of prophets' writings that bolster the claims of the Bible, and completes the picture for me. The Book of Mormon, along with the Bible, has helped me to know that Jesus Christ is real, He lives, and is my Savior. Show more Show less

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

We do not...but we revere him as a prophet, like we would revere Moses, Abraham, Peter, or Paul. Joseph Smith was chosen as the first prophet after a long period of time where prophets were not called. We believe he was asked to do very important things like bring to light additional scripture (the Book of Mormon), and to re-organize and bring back Christ's church, so that the full truth about our Savior and God's plan for us could be spread throughout the world in preparation for the second coming of Jesus Christ. Because I have read the Book of Mormon, studied it, and prayed to God for a witness of its divine origins, and received an answer to that prayer in the affirmative, I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. What are some things that tell you there is a God?

I have had unmistakable feelings that there is a God during the births of all four of my children. These feelings took me my surprise as I watched these precious new lives take their first breaths, that my wife and I helped God create. I felt in my heart that my wife and I were not alone in that creation process, and that we are all part of a great plan with a beautiful purpose for our existence. Show more Show less
