Hi I'm Jake

I am a father, a rural educator, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am married and the father of four great kids. Having grown up in a big city in Arizona it has been a big change to live and work in a small farming community, but I enjoy it tremendously. I love working in education and trying to make a difference in the lives of my students. Also I love to sing, play with my kids, throw the ball with my dog and watch movies with my wife. I read constantly. Recently I began a graduate program to further my own education. This year we planted a garden for the first time, which has been quite an experience.

Why I am a Mormon

I remember when I was about eight years old attending a 'Fathers and Sons' camp out with my dad and brother. We woke up early that morning and had a special morning talk about Christ and the restoration of the priesthood. This was followed by a testimony meeting and after listening for I while I felt the spirit and shared my testimony also. Later in high school I read the New Testament several times, cover to cover and that is when my understanding and love of the scriptures began. After this I read the Book of Mormon cover to cover and I knew that Christ loved me and that he had a plan for me. I have spent many hours on my knees in prayer to my Father in Heaven and I know that this is Christ's church on the Earth. I know the our Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith and through him set up their church on the earth once more. It is because of Christ, his sacrifice for us, that gives me such hope in my life. I know that no matter what happens, he loves me and wants for me to return to live with him again. I have spent countless hours in prayer to him and I know that he answers prayers because he has answered mine.

How I live my faith

First I read my scriptures and pray daily. We also pray and read as a family. Each Sunday we attend church meetings. Currently I am serving as our 'mission leader' in our congregation. This means I help coordinate the missionary work in our area with the full time missionaries. In the past I have worked with the youth, planned activities, given numerous talks, taught Sunday school for youth and adults and have been the ward employment specialist. Also I have organized our 'home bound' sacrament service, which is where we talk the sacrament to members of our congregation who are unable to attend services due to health or physical impairments. I served a two year mission in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. While it was cold and there were many days that were discouraging, it was also amazing and an honor to serve the Lord in that way. After my two year mission I had a unique opportunity to serve as a service performance missionary in Nauvoo, Illinois for a summer. There I gave tours the restored homes, made souvenir horse shoes, and performed nightly in the shows. I try to live my faith in what I do and what I say each day. Lately, I have participated with our congregation in cutting and preparing fire wood for several local members who do not have money or means to prepare wood for themselves for the upcoming winter.
