Hi I'm Tom

I'm a Mormon. I grew up in Franklin, Idaho on the family farm that my Great Grandfather homesteaded in 1860.

About Me

After 2 years of college (what used to be called Ricks), I worked on the family farm for about 4 years. I left and moved to Washington State where I worked at two different fertilizer companies. I liked that work a lot. I heard of a job controlling mosquitoes and applied for that. I have been the manager of a county Mosquito control program now for over 31 years. I like the work, it is very busy in the late spring and summer and early fall, but the winters are a much easier. I am a self starter which helps me in my work. From one end of my county to the other is about 75 miles. I see all kinds of wild life and lots of wheat fields and other crops which interests me. This job has been great for me because I have taken the time to be a soccer coach and a baseball coach with my sons and daughter. As the children grew up we mowed lawns together to help them make money for missions and college. It was special to see them grow up knowing how to work and being responsible. They also were taught how to budget their money which has helped them a lot. My wife and I have a very special bond. We have known each other since we were little. My brother and my wifes sister were dating at one time, but never married. We never dated until college and it only took about 3 weeks before we were engaged. We lost our first child at child birth and adopted our next one when he was only 3 days old. There were challenges, but we would do it again.

Why I am a Mormon

My mother took my sister and I to church while we were young. My Dad was not a member. As I grew up my Dad and I had a special bond. I would stay home from church at times just to be with him. I went to 1 year of college, then I joined the Army National Guard. After basic training and 8 more weeks of special training I was able to come home to finish my time. Two months after I came home from boot camp, I received a honorable discharge and was called to serve a mission for the church in the states of Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee. I served for two years. That is where I gained my testimony. I had so many special experiences and drew closer to my Heavenly Father. People that I taught and baptized became as close to me as my own brothers and sister. I read the Book of Mormon and I prayed and fasted alot to gain my testimony and continued throughout my mission. I know the Gospel of Jesus Christ is true, I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is Heavenly Father's is true. Correct principles are taught in the church, just as they were taught in his ancient church when Christ was on the earth. I know this because the church is lead by a Prophet of God. The prophets name right now is Thomas S Monson. He is a prophet to the whole world, just as Moses and Abraham. Anyone can find out that this church is true, if they will study and read the Book of Mormon and pray and ask Heavenly Father if it is true. He will answer your prayers because he answered mine. The gospel has brought me tremendous happiness, taught me how to love my family and show them the respect they deserve. It does not matter how old you are. I told you my Dad was not a member of the church when I was younger, but he joined when he was in his early 50's. He became very active and loved to go to church.

How I live my faith

I have tried to stay active in the church. I have had several callings of leadership, from visiting the homes of different members on a regular basis, at least monthly to serving as a bishop for almost 7 years. A bishop leads and over sees the congregation. I have worked with the youth as a leader for over 15 or more years. I have been a ScoutMaster and have helped my 3 sons with their Scouting and they all earned their Eagle Scout Awards. Something I did not do as a boy, but wanted my sons to have the opportunity. I have tried to teach not only my children to work hard, but to be honest in all they do. I always felt I did not need to sign a paper to make a bond, my word was good enough and I want people to know that I live by that. My faith is very special and important to me. It is how I live my life and how I treat others. It has brought me much happiness and it can bring much happiness to anyone who will let their heart be touched by the Holy Ghost. This church is not just a religion that you go to church on Sunday and do whatever the rest of the week. It is a way of life and if a person will follow the teachings of the church they will be happy and my have the opportunity to live with our Heavenly Father some day. God and Jesus Christ are real and they have bodies of flesh and bone. The Holy Ghost is a personage of spirit and testifies of the truthfullness of the gospel.
