Hi I'm Mary

I grew up in Florida, served in the U.S. Marine Corps for almost 23yrs & lived in Europe for a number of years. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a convert to the church and was baptized in 2000. I come from a large family - three brothers and two sisters. I am the only member in my family. My husband, who is not a member, actually helped me make the decision to be baptized! I have a Master's degree in Teacher Education and an undergraduate degree in Sociology/Education. I love to read and will read just about anything except no romance novels. Ick!

Why I am a Mormon

I "investigated" the church for almost 4years! The decison to be baptized and join was one of the most important & best decisions I've made in my life. I found answers to questions I had been asking for a long time. I gain strength and peace in the surety and truthfulness of the restored gospel and the knowledge of a living prophet on this earth. My faith centers me, fills me and reminds me daily of who I am, why I am here, of Heavenly Father's love and plan for me. My faith gives me hope in a world of hopelessness. My faith constantly challenges me to be a better person (daughter, sister, wife, friend, etc...), to reach outside my comfort zone and learn something new every single day. My faith gives me peace.

How I live my faith

How do I live my faith? I try to remember that the best way to demonstrate my faith is by my actions. I volunteer in the community with Meals on Wheels, just started teaching young children in my ward, and work hard at doing my visiting teaching every month. I get SO much out of each of these activities and consider them blessings! I live my faith by studying the scriptures, praying, listening to the leaders of the church and being obedient to the Lord's counsel. I live my faith by seeking confirmation & answers through prayer and not just blindly following along. I live my faith by not giving up when I fail miserably at doing these things on a consistent basis! I live my faith by believing in the power of forgiveness and the infinite love & grace of God available to me. I live my faith one day - sometimes one minute or hour - at a time.

Why don’t Mormons drink coffee, tea, or alcohol? What is the Mormon Church’s law of health and proper diet?

I don't drink coffee, tea or alcohol because I believe God DID give this law of health to Joseph Smith. Just as importantly, I believe in being obedient to God. I do not believe I will go to hell if I drink coffee, tea or alcohol! I do believe in keeping covenants I have made. I made a covenant/promise with God to be obedient regarding this law of health and likewise, He made a covenant with me. When I am obedient, I receive infinite blessings! It seems like such a small thing; to give up alcohol, tea & coffee, in return for the infinite blessings I get! Show more Show less
