Hi I'm Heidi

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Almost 12 years ago I married my wise, funny, kind running partner from college. We've moved 5 times since then while he got his medical training. In those 5 years I finished my masters degree, taught at several colleges, and had 5 adorable lively girls including a set of twins and one strong, happy boy. We've camped, hiked, swam, canoed, and ran all over the country -- near midwest lakes and cornfields, in east coast forests, in the high Uintah mountains, and along the west coast. And when we're not adventuring outside our home base, there's a lot of dancing in the front room with tutus and dress ups, jumping on the trampoline, walking back and forth to school, learning how to choose the right, yell quietly, shut doors softly, hold our new baby gently, and finding a reason to celebrate almost every day.

Why I am a Mormon

I always believed that what my parents taught me about Jesus Christ and his gospel was true. I felt the peace that came when we prayed as a family to Heavenly Father. I saw my parents trust in the Lord during trials and saw that things always turned out for our good. I also watched my two older brothers serve missions. I noticed their strong faith that the Book of Mormon is true and that the gospel of Jesus Christ is worth sacrificing for; it makes us kinder, more humble, and more confident in doing right. A few years later I left on a mission to Germany. There, serving in the country my mom was born in, I learned even deeper through sincere prayer and experience that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of the Lord and that he restored Christ’s church to this earth. My experiences and answers to prayer confirmed that the Book of Mormon is the word of God and that, together with the Bible and other scripture, it brings us closer to Christ as it answers our questions and guides our lives. I continue to see the hand of the Lord in my life as I parent our children and interact with the people around me. I feel his love for me as I pray to him for guidance and comfort. I know that I am nothing without the Lord’s blessings, guidance, and miracles every day.

How I live my faith

In order to not be bogged down by the daily mundaness and crazy busy-ness that comes with raising kids, I read the scriptures every day and try to think about what I've read and apply it to my life. That combined with sincere prayer and an effort to seek for divine guidance in all my decisions and actions during the day really helps me to not lose my temper, find happiness in the little things every day, and not get overly worried or stressed when things don't go as smooth as planned. One of the most fun ways I've been able to strengthen and live my faith has been leading the music time in church for the 8-11 year old children. I hear their faith in the comments they make and hear and see their joy and faith as they sing about Christ. It's an uplifting 20 minutes every Sunday that leaves me feeling happy and more excited to do as the songs teach -- "try to be like Jesus," "love one another," and "stand for the truth." In a couple Sundays I get to start teaching a class in church about the basic doctrines of Christ's gospel. I'm eager to review the basic doctrines and strengthen my own testimony of their truthfulness as I discuss them with the class members.
