Hi I'm Portia

I have lived in Arizona my entire life. I was home-schooled, but am currently going to college. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My name is Portia. I am fourteen years old. I have played classical violin and piano for about nine years. I have also been skiing for many years and have snowboarded for a few as well. My mother homeschooled me when I was younger, as well as my five older siblings. I am currently attending a community college to get prerequisites to attend a four-year degree college. I am getting my bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering. After my undergraduate work I plan to go to med-school. I aspire to become a brain-surgeon, but I will decide my specific field after I get to med-school! Being a surgeon, and even just being a doctor in general, is not the best life-style, but it is an excellent opportunity to make a difference in peoples' lives. I hope to be able to save lives and make the lives of those I help better. I enjoy reading science-fiction and fantasy novels and I love adventure movies. I also love to sing, play music, listen to music, and draw. I also enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and camping. I have had two older brothers serve on missions for the LDS church, one in Brazil and the other in Romania, and I have another older brother who is currently serving his mission. He is serving in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I also have a younger sister, about fourteen years younger, who was a bit of a surprise. I was a little apprehensive at first, but I know that she has been a great blessing in my life and I am excited to watch her grow up.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into the church and have gone to church my entire life. As a younger child I was taught that the teachings of the gospel were true. However, now that I am older and I have had the opportunity to start developing my own testimony, I know for myself that the Mormon church is the true church. I have been able to see the blessing of the gospel in the lives of people around me. I am so grateful for the sacrifice that Christ made for me. Because of the atonement of Christ I can be forgiven when I make mistakes so I can live with my Heavenly Father again. Because of the gospel, I have the opportunity to live the best life I can. My life would be so much harder without the gospel as a guiding standard in my life. I have not had any real trials in my life, but when I have needed comfort, I have always been able to turn to my Heavenly Father and my Savior. I am a Mormon because I believe in my Heavenly Father and the plan that he has created for me so I can return to live with him. I am a Mormon because I believe in Jesus Christ.

How I live my faith

Being a Mormon is more than just going to church each Sunday and then going home and going about your week like nothing has happened. Mormons have very high standards in dress, language, attitude, and other such areas. Being so young, I do not have a calling in the church, but I have a duty as a member of the church to maintain my standards. I always try to do my best to dress modestly, speak cleanly, and have a good attitude about things. This can be hard for me because I have a tendency to judge other people. However, I live my faith by striving to be a better self each day. I also live my faith by the choices I make and the choices that I have made. As a Mormon, and just as a human being, I have already made the decision never to touch alcohol or drugs. I do not want to harm the body that I have been given and in effect, make my life harder than it needs to be. We all make decisions every day, but because I have the gospel in my life, I have a reason to try and make the best decisions I can. I know that the gospel has been a positive influence in my life. It has allowed me to have high standards which are important to me as a person. The gospel is also very important to me as a member of a family that I love. Because of the gospel, my family will be able to be together forever. The gospel is a very important part of my life. I am so blessed to be a part of this wonderful church.
