Hi I'm Zach Tanner

I'm a Army dentist. I enjoy weight training, mountain biking, photography, history and the Russian language. And I'm a Mormon

About Me

My name is Zach. I live in Fayetteville, NC where I am an Army dentist. Before coming to NC, I studied in Colorado, Utah and Arizona and completed degrees in Russian and dental surgery. I enjoy traveling, weight training, mountain biking, snowboarding, photography, books, wristwatches, cars and playing the piano. One day I hope to set up my own dental practice and to make time for real estate on the side. I am married with two children.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Christian because I believe that the Bible, as originally written, is the word of God to us - his children. Although it was given through his ancient prophets, it remains relevant in our day and can help us to live happier, more successful, more fulfilled lives. I know that Jesus Christ is the son of God and that he elected to come to this earth where he lived an exemplary life and sacrificed Himself on our behalf, willingly taking upon Himself the consequence of all the sin of all mankind. He has earned the privilege of extending forgiveness and mercy unto us and, although we of ourselves are imperfect, He can invite us home to live with God in a perfected state - his grace allows us to advance far beyond what we could do independently! I do not believe that God has ceased to speak; he continues to reveal his word to us through prophets and apostles in our day. Although the Bible is a supernal resource, I am grateful that God continues to offer guidance and support to us. This access to continuing revelation is the reason that I am a Mormon. There is a prophet and 12 apostles on the earth today and their words are a divine source of counsel and comfort. In the Book of Mormon, the Pearl of Great Price and the Doctrine and Covenants, we have scripture which complements and reinforces the Holy Bible. To me, it is immensely reassuring that the Lord continues to conduct his Church on the earth today. We don't have to guess or supposition or conjecture as to how this or that should be done - we can know.

How I live my faith

I am active in my local branch of the Mormon church, where I teach gospel lessons once a month and partake of the sacrament (AKA holy communion, eucharist) every Sunday. Through the branch I enjoy opportunities to serve in the community and to socialize with other Christians. Church activity is important, but what is most important is what that activity serves to reinforce - an inward commitment to living as Christ would have me live. I try to make decisions which will be pleasing to Him. At school, in matters of sexual purity, in terms of what I take into my body I try to listen to the influence of the spirit in making choices. I make more than my share of mistakes, but I know that the atonement of Christ - his grace and ability to save - can restore me to spiritual health any time I stumble.
