Hi I'm Shawn

I'm a husband and dad. I'm a satellite software engineer. I'm a musician. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a husband to a wonderful wife with a beautiful daughter, who is living proof that kids bring immense joy to life but don't come with instruction manuals. I went to college and got a BS degree in Electrical Engineering, but decided I like writing software better. I now work on satellites which is a dream because I loved watching public TV shows about space and science when I was a kid. I am now working on a Masters in Space Systems Engineering and who knows, maybe I'll work for NASA one day. I like computers and am a casual gamer, but I also love the outdoors and like to hike, backpack, camp, and cliff-jump. I play the piano and am a closet composer and arranger. I also play the French Horn and have played in marching bands, concert bands and orchestras, though my current form of musical expression is my brass quintet. Where else can you get a mix of march, classical, Dixie, Big Band, modern, folk, and Beatles music?

Why I am a Mormon

The answer to that question has multiple parts, but one part is in the nickname given to me by a co-worker: Smile Guy. As you can probably guess, it's because every time he sees me I am smiling. Now some people think that someone can't be happy 100% of the time and I agree with them. I am by no means perfect, but living my faith helps me achieve what I feel is at least a 90% happiness ratio, even when things aren't going as planned. Life is all about choices. I like to observe people and try to learn from their decisions, to learn from their mistakes and their successes. This is so I can hopefully make good choices, because making good choices in life is a big part of what brings true happiness. It's easier to make right choices by living correct principles and the Church helps me to remember what those principles are and why we live them. Now some may question next: "Well, why should I listen to what a Church tells me to do?" Answer: If you really believed that God has your best interests in mind, and that He personally directs a church on earth, then wouldn't you follow the teachings of that Church? And that's why I'm a Mormon. I really believe that God has a personal interest in my life and I've felt it. And I really believe He has a church here on earth and I know from personal experience and observation that what it teaches is true.

How I live my faith

I'm not an eloquent person, so my main method of living my faith is by serving my neighbor. I participate in the men's organization that cares for members of our church and performs service inside and outside of our church, ranging from helping someone move to organizing volunteers for a fundraiser walk/run for the Child Crisis Center. I also like working with our youth by helping with Boy Scout projects and teaching a Sunday school class to 9 year olds. I try to be a good neighbor and friend. Basically, I try to be the best Christian I know how to be.
