Hi I'm Michael

I grew up in Southern California. Have 5 kids, and am a rocket scientist and outdoor enthusiast.

About Me

As long as I can remember, I have loved aviation. Some of my earliest memories are when my mother would take me to our local airport to watch small aircraft come in and land. This eventually led to a career with United Launch Alliance, building unmanned rockets to launch spacecraft for our nation's space needs, including commercial, defense, and NASA satellites and unmanned spacecraft, from Global Positioning Satellites to the Juno, the space probe sent to Jupiter. Specifically, I manage the integration of the spacecraft to our launch vehicles and follow a mission from contract award to spacecraft separation in space. I have many hobbies and interests, and try to be as well rounded as possible, a renaissance man of sorts. I build WWI era remote control model aircraft that I fly. I love astronomy, and frequently search for deep space objects with my Dobsonian telescope. I'm an outdoors enthusiast, and love surfing and scuba-diving when I'm near the ocean. I love swimming, hiking, camping, and boating in our canoe with my family. I love to garden, I speak Spanish fluently and one of my all time favorite books is Don Quixote. While most people avoid talking religion and politics, I love discussions in those areas and consider myself a defender of the constitution and personal liberty. My work affords me opportunities to travel around the world and I travel with my spouse and enjoy learning about the people and cultures we visit.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents raised me in the LDS church, but there came a turning point in my life. When I was a sophomore in high school, I saw many of my friends getting into drugs and alcohol, and I had to find out for myself if this church was true. For the first time in my life, I read the Book of Mormon from cover to cover through the LDS seminary program. It was through the account of Joseph Smith and the First Vision, that I came to know that the Bible was true, the Book of Mormon was true, Jesus Christ was the Son of God, and that God restored his ancient church once again on earth with prophets, temples, and apostolic sealing powers.

How I live my faith

President Gordon B Hinckley once said about members of the church "that the lives of our people must become the most meaningful expression of our faith and, in fact, therefore, the symbol of our worship." (The Symbol of our Faith, Ensign 2005) As imperfect as I am, I strive to live daily the teachings of Jesus Christ. Central to our Heavenly Father's plan of happiness is the family. I've been blessed with an incredible spouse and five wonderful children. We have lots of fun together! I strive to be the husband and father God wants me to be. The Glory of God is intelligence, and the more I learn about math and science, astronomy, the arts, and all the time I spend outdoors with my family, the more I see God in everything.
