Hi I'm Doug

I'm retired and my wife and I are heading to West Africa for our 2nd mission to help strengthen others. I'm a Mormon!

About Me

I am living the American Dream! I retired before turning 60, my five kids are college graduates, gainfully employed and happily married, and I have five going on six cute grand-kids. I've been married for 37 years to my best friend and we just returned from a serving a mission to West Africa, helping strengthen the Church's 1,000+ congregations across seven countries. We are now taking a few months to get re-acquainted with family, friends and first-world creature comforts before heading back to Africa to lead the missionary efforts in Liberia. In the past year, we have grown to love the humble, sincere people in that part of the world and we are thrilled for the chance to continue service. It will be hard to be away from those we love for a couple more years, but I love being able to bless others, make this world a better place and set an example of service for my own kids and their kids.

Why I am a Mormon

My family ties in the Mormon church go back many generations. While I appreciate the heritage and sacrifice of my ancestors, my faith is based on my own feelings about God's plan and his love for me. I remember as a teenager deciding that I needed to figure out what really made sense to chart the course for my life. As I sorted through my fundamental beliefs, the anchor I kept coming back to was that I knew I have a loving Heavenly Father who wants the best for me. That is something that I have always known throughout my life and that became more intuitive as I became a father myself. I accepted that if my Heavenly Father loves me, then he has a plan and a purpose for me on this earth. He wants me to grow and develop, which means I have to learn through challenges in my life. He will comfort, encourage me and provide guidance, but ultimately he allows me to grow into my full potential by letting me take initiative and learn from my mistakes. With that fundamental, the puzzle pieces all fell into place. God's plan includes a Savior to set a perfect example for me and an atonement to allow me to overcome my weaknesses and imperfections and return to my Father in Heaven if I follow the guidelines that Jesus Christ provided. Those guidelines include helping my fellowman and loving and honoring my Heavenly Father. The Mormon Church teaches the principles that bring me peace and a lasting happiness. As I work to model my relationship with my own family and others based on Jesus Christ's example of love and respect, I can sense in a very literal way, that God is watching over me and helping me through my everyday challenges.

How I live my faith

One of my favorite responsibilities in the church has been working with youth. They have their whole lives ahead of them and are brimming with optimism and faith in the future. I like to think I have learned a few lessons over my life that I can share with them, but also look for new things I can learn from them as we talk through different issues and ideas. I also enjoy working with the media, other faith groups and community leaders to give them a better understanding of my values, beliefs and my church as we collaborate to build a stronger community. I love getting to know and appreciate the insights of so many good people of all faiths and backgrounds who are committed to helping others and following Christ's example to lift our fellowman and relieve suffering throughout the world.
