Hi I'm Jerry

I am Ph.D. student in social work, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am in my fourth year of the social work Ph.D. program at The University of Texas at Austin. I am married to an outstanding women, and we have one daughter that is way more fun than we had ever hoped. We also have another little girl on the way. I grew up in California and have lived in the western half of the US my whole life. My family and I love Austin and the great people we have met here.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised a Mormon, but I only became interested after I graduated high school. At that time, I found that the way I was living wasn't making me happy, in fact, I was very unhappy. I realized that I needed the Savior and His gospel in my life. So, I changed and haven't looked back since. I was able to serve a mission and was married in the temple. I know that this church and what it teaches have the power to help individuals draw nearer to God more so than by any other means.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by my service to my family, in the church, and in my community. In the role as a husband and father, I find that I can serve my wife and family by living the standards of the gospel and doing my best to love and provide for them. I serve in the church as a member of a bishopric and and a home teacher. In these responsibilities, I have privilege of working with those who are struggling in my congregation as well as in the local community in order to help uplift and provide assistance in whatever I can.

Who was Joseph Smith?

Jerry
Joseph Smith Jr. was born in 1805 in Sharon, Windsor County, Vermont, to Joseph and Lucy Mack Smith. He had 10 brothers and sisters. His parents taught him to pray, read the Bible, and to have faith in God. At age 14, as an answer to fervent prayer, Joseph saw God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, in his First Vision. At age 17, Joseph began to receive heavenly messengers who prepared him for his role in the Restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ to the earth. He was a prophet, just like Moses, Isaiah and others in biblical times. He was strengthened by God to fulfill His mission much as was Jeremiah who said, “Ah Lord God! Behold I cannot speak: for I am a child. But the Lord said unto me, Say not I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak” (Jeremiah 1:6-7). Show more Show less
