Hi I'm Elder Derek Russell

I am a missionary serving in Guadalajara Mexico, I used to be a zip-line tour guide, I love to quote movies / sing, I am a Mormon.

About Me

I am number seven in a family of ten, the classic Mormon Family. I lived in Arizona and then moved to Washington when I was about 10 years old. I worked three jobs to pay my own way to serve a mission (I was a tour guide, a piano mover, and worked fast food). I love to sketch and quote movies, I love being outside and enjoy cooking. I love playing sports and driving with the windows rolled down. I Have a deep love for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and I know that my redeemer lives.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised in the church, but I can honestly say that i would not be where I am or who I am without the LDS/Mormon faith. In my life I have had many challenges and trials that have always made me wonder "why did this happen?" or "why would God allow this happen?" Sometimes i would just be so sad and depressed because I felt that I was all on my own in a big world. One day I was reading my scriptures in the Doctorine and Covenants section 58:3-7 where it said: "ye cannot behold with your natural eyes... the design of your God concerning those things which shall come here after... For after much tribulation come the blessings. Wherefore the day cometh... the hour is not yet, but nigh at hand..." This scripture helped me realize that there will always be hard times, we will always have trials; but God is in charge and when we follow his commandments and are faithful to his teachings we will recieve many blessings. We may not know why something is happening, we may not know what God wants for us, but he is there looking out for us with our abilities in mind. He will never give us a challenge we can't handle (1 Cor. 10:13), He loves all of us and he knows what we can become. After finding this scripture I still had many problems but i just remembered that God was in charge and he knows me by name. He loves me, He loves you, He loves the whole world.

How I live my faith

"I'm trying to be like Jesus... I'm trying to be gentle and loving in deed and in thought for these are the things Jesus taught." I was a leader in my youth groups and I am a Eagle Scout. I serve many people in the communities where I live and have lived. Before I left on my mission I taught the little children with my mom and other leaders. I try to only say things that are nice and that can strengthen others instead of tearing them down.

Why do Mormon missionaries proselyte?

Elder Derek Russell
One of the last commandments the Lord Jesus Christ gave His disiples was to go forth and to share the Gospel (see Matt. 28:19). Currently I am out serving a mission because of the way this message can change peoples lives. I have seen addicts -people who are doing things not in harmony with the Saviors teachings- change almost overnight. I am out not to make the world a better place, I am serving because it is what the Our Lord did during His mortal ministry. Healing the sick. Visiting the poor and the ones in need. Sometimes spiritually poor, not knowing of our Heavenly Father nor Jesus Christ whom He sent. I am serving because I am a disciple of Christ and I have the responsibility to give, like the widows mite, something beyond price. My short time here on the earth. I know that our message is true.
