Hi I'm Mel

I am a son, brother, husband, and father. I work as a Physician Assistant in southeast Alaska. And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love to fish and hunt in the Alaska wilderness. I love taking my family and friends out and showing them the beauties of the great earth we have to enjoy. My favorite sport is volleyball, but I have also played a lot of basketball, football, soccer, baseball, table tennis, etc. I like to watch the olympic games and learning about other countries. I like watching college sports and my favorite team is the BYU Cougars. I have come to enjoy the knowledge I have received from reading good books and am collecting more books than my shelves can hold. I really enjoy meeting new people, getting to know them and learning from them. I lived in Germany for two years as a missionary and grew to love many of the people I met there. I studied at Snow College and Utah State University in Utah and Rocky Mountain College in Montana. I have grown to enjoy living in very rural places, learning from the people and sharing what I know with them. In general, I love life and all the opportunities it has given me and I love to wake up to each new day (especially when I got some sleep) anticipating the great experiences ahead.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up in the church and in Utah. Some may say that is enough reason to stay a member of the church for life. Not for me. Through my childhood and into my youth I had a few experiences that created the desire in me to know for myself whether this church is true. I want to take nothing away from my parents and church leaders who always showed me much more patients and love than I feel I deserve. They, especially my parents and family, were and are the main reasons I am who I am. What has ultimately made the most difference for me is that I have had experiences through my life when I feel with certainty that God has spoken to me. I want everyone to have that experience, as many as will. I have also come to know through the witness of the Holy Ghost that Jesus Christ lives and look forward to His returning to the earth. I also have come to know by the same spirit that Joseph Smith is a prophet of the same God who has spoken to me. They work together. The line of prophets continues into our day and will continue until the Savior comes again. I am grateful every minute for the testimony of the truth I have received and look forward to many more opportunities to share what I have learned with others.

How I live my faith

I am currently the branch president in our branch here. I did not volunteer for this calling or really even want it, but I do enjoy it. I enjoy interviewing people, visiting people in their homes, and sharing the burdens of the people around here. I know the gospel has something for everyone. Everyone has difficulties and it is definitely true that 'no man is an island.' I love the youth. I am also enjoying teaching early morning seminary. I most enjoy seeing the joy that comes into the lives of those who put the gospel of Jesus Christ to work in their lives. It doesn't matter if a person has just joined the church or has just decided to step up their discipleship. When people choose to follow the teachings of Jesus sincerely, there is a glow about them that isn't there otherwise. Those who pay the price to learn faith, patience, charity, hope, obedience and the other principles of the gospel have a very rich life experience here and the promise of more good to come. I am striving to be one of those types of people.
