Hi I'm Bret McGhie

I love rabbits, biking and Ultimate Frisbee. I'm a Full-Time Missionary, son, brother, friend, joker, Eagle Scout and I'm a Mormon

About Me

First thing I have one eye. I have a disability called Ptosis, Strabismus and Ambleopia. It leaves me nearly blind in my right eye. On the more normal side of things, I graduated from high school in 2011 and since then have joined the work force. In high school I played a lot of sports including Basketball, Volleyball and Ultimate Frisbee. On the YM Volleyball team provided by the LDS church, I learned friendship and brotherhood between members of the church and non members. My team won the regional tournament 3 years in a row. When I graduated high school, I was accepted into college, but decided it was more important to earn money to pay for my mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I started out as a temp working in a few different warehouses. After 6 months of doing that, I started looking for something else. I finally found an insulation company that was pretty good for me. I worked doing that for 9 months. I'm not working anymore so that I can prepare for My Mission of 2 years.

Why I am a Mormon

Even though I was born into the church, the church provides happiness in my life, and a loving family. People ask me if I am just Mormon because I was born Mormon and because that's how it has always been and my answer to them is no. I am a Mormon because the teachings make sense and make me happy. The one that makes more sense to me than any other religion is the plan of salvation. The plan is laid out by Jesus Christ for the way that we can return to live with our Heavenly Father. It starts with life before Earth where we are all spirit children of God. It moves on to Earth life and eventually what happens after death. The question that I always had in my mind was, "What is the point of life? Why do we have to be good if there is nothing after death?" The plan of salvation details the answers to those questions in a way that not only clarifies our purpose, but comforts me that I know that I can live with my Heavenly Father again. No other religion teaches this doctrine or other doctrines that make sense and comfort me. My family means so much to me and is central to most of the things this church focuses on. The Plan of Salvation is not only for the individual but also for the family so we can live together forever with those that mean the most to us, the ones that bring us the most happiness! This is why I'm a Mormon, because I know my Savior died for me so I can live with those who I love after I die. This brings happiness into my life and the lives of so many others.

How I live my faith

My favorite way to live the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is service. Any chance I get to serve I do. I do anything from yard work to house cleaning, hauling things for people and much more. After a bad wind storm, there were branches all over the roads and the city wasn't cleaning them up, so I grabbed my pickup and a trailer and my chain saw and cleaned up the streets for the city. The most recent way I am living my faith is by serving a mission in the Colorado, Colorado Springs Mission in which I will bring the good news of the gospel to people that haven't heard anything about it and where I can more fully serve my fellow man and My God. As a Missionary I am learning so much more about how to live my faith, and how to bring other people closer to Christ. In this process I am getting closer to my savior who I know loves me individually as if I were his younger brother.

What do Mormons believe is the purpose of life?

Bret McGhie
My purpose in life is to strive to me more like Jesus Christ, the only perfect person to ever walk the Earth. There is a primary song that says, "I'm tryng to be like Jesus I'm following in his ways. I'm trying to love as he did, in all that I do and say..." This song outlines how we must live while here on Earth to gain God's purpose for us in life, "to bring to pass the immortality and Eternal life of men" (Moses 1:39). There are certain things we must do to gain eternal life. The first is to gain a body. By choosing to come to Earth that step was achieved. Next we must learn what God commands us to do and follow those commandments. One of these commandments is to "try to be like Jesus." In the long run, we need to form family relationships that, through the power of the Priesthood, can last for eternity. This brings happiness and is a key aspect to God's Plan of Salvation, and is one of the ways we gain eternal life. Simply, our purpose here on Earth is to return to our Father in heaven by making righteous decisions and acting as Christ would and to live in happiness with our familys for eternity.
