Hi I'm Lawrence
I am a solo practitioner patent attorney. I am married and have seven children. Our oldest child is 25 years-old. Our youngest child is five months-old with a gap of 13 years between the youngest child and the next oldest child. Needless to say that this child was a surprise and that her arrival has significantly change my plans for the rest of my life, but she reminds me every day how great it is to have a family.
Why I am a Mormon
My parents were active members of the church and I was baptized at age eight. Over the years, I have learned that the teachings of the church about Jesus Christ are true. I have gained a testimony by way of the Spirit that Jesus is the Christ and our Savior and Redeemer. I am grateful to know of Christ and that he loves us. I have gained a testimony that the priesthood of God has been restored to the earth and that Christ's church is operated using that priesthood authority. I have also learned over the years that the Lord helps those who love and try to follow him. That does not mean that life will not have challenges, but that the Lord will help us through them.
In what ways have your prayers been answered?
Many years ago, I had a debt that really weighed on me. The prophets have always counseled us to get out of debt and stay out of debt. I prayed for a long time to try to find some way to earn extra money to pay off the debt early. One day, I felt that the way to earn extra money would be to write a book. I came up with many book ideas and sent of proposals to publishers only to receive rejection notices every time. One day, I went to a local map shop to purchase a topographical map to take the Boy Scouts in my ward on a hike. When I walked into the shop, a voice said in my mind "you can do that" and I had the impression to look to my left where I saw a book on the counter. I picked the book up. It was about navigation using GPS receivers. GPS receivers for civilians were just starting to come onto the market. I bought the book, took it home, and read it. When I was done, I figure I could write a better book because I had spend so much time as a Scout and a Scout leader using maps. This time, when I sent out book proposals, two publishers answered positively. I felt inspired to go with one publisher over the other. To make a long story short, the book has sold over 200,000 copies and has been in print over 16 years. We got the debt paid off, but I knew that it was not me that paid the debt. It was the Lord who guided me and made it possible. This has been only one experience over the years.
How I live my faith
I try to follow Jesus Christ by keeping the commandments that we have in the scriptures and the instructions we receive from God by way of a living prophet. I try to follow the Lord by serving my family. My wife and I work diligently to train our children and to prepare them to be productive citizens. We teach them about the Lord's plan of happiness and share our testimonies with them, so that they will know where to turn to find happiness.
