Hi I'm Maria

I'm a Mormon or better yet- I like to say I am a Latter Day Saint. I am a Christian.

About Me

I am a mother, a wife, a sister and a friend. I enjoy reading books and love animals. I also like gardening and researching my family history. I have lived and worked in three different countries- South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. I am of Portuguese descent and grew up speaking three languages. I do enjoy travelling and experiencing and learning new cultures, but that is not to say I have traveled widely. I haven't been to South America , the Middle East or the most northern parts of the planet. When I was younger I enjoyed running and playing squash but as one gets older and work gets more demanding, focus changes. I now walk the dog and swim in the summer months.

Why I am a Mormon

I read the Book of Mormon and found it was written in the same spirit as that of the Holy Bible. I recognized God's hand in it. If you study the bible and have faith in Jesus Christ, if you pray and feel prompted by the Holy Ghost to read something other than the bible that testifies of Christ, that does not contradict but rather verifies that the bible is holy and true- then why should you not follow your heart and follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost. I investigated the church for quite a while before I joined. I heard much criticism. I chose to use Jesus' words as my guiding light- By their fruits you shall know them. The gospel and the church has brought me so much joy and peace. It has given me clear guidelines on how to raise my children, on how to strengthen home and family, on how to strive to become a better person. My family is blessed by the priesthood. The church is blessed by the priesthood. We have a living prophet who gives the church and it's members clear guidance on matters that God knows we need. Most of all I'm a Mormon because Jesus died and was resurrected. He atoned for my sins and this is His church.

How I live my faith

I teach the youth at church. I am also involved in running youth activities and youth programs at church. We try to teach and help them grow up to their full potential and to develop the talents and God given gifts that they have. Being good citizens, giving voluntary service, reaching out to the sick and lonely, having a good work ethic and education are all important tenants of our faith. I also visit the female members of the congregation regularly. We like to call each other sisters because firstly we are all children of God and secondly we are sisters in the gospel. Our congregation is like one big family and I have so many opportunities to make so many friends . I attend church every Sunday. I avoid shopping or participating in sports on a Sunday. I try to keep it Holy- to be a day different from the others= to make it a day where I can devote myself more to my innermost beliefs. I read my scriptures regularly, pray and fast regularly and visit the temple as often as I can. I ponder on what I have read and constantly evaluate myself thereon and pray for the Lord's help, that my weaknesses may become my strengths.
