Hi I'm John

I'm a Mormon. I grew up the the Pacific Northwest region of Washington State and have lived here all my life.

About Me

I have grown up in Washington State, more specifically, in Whatcom County and remain here. I was a Park Manager for 5 years before I changed careers and completed a teaching degree. I have been teaching 7th and 8th grades for 32 years in the town I grew up in. I teach technology, health, and P.E. My wife and I have raised 4 children and are fortunate to currently have 6 grandchildren. Our family is our joy, our grandchildren a very special joy! I built our home on a acre of rich, fertile farmland that is ideal for growing a vegetable garden. I enjoy learning about, then building things such as furniture (adirondack chairs), and kayaks. I am concerned about education and want to all I can to prepare our grandchildren (mine and others) for the future.

Why I am a Mormon

My wife joined the Church 9 years before I was baptized. That is a long time! I am stubborn to say the least. I believed in all that was said to me concerning the beliefs of the Church, but I had a BIG sticking point ... the little Primary children knew so much more than I did as an adult, it would be embarrassing to not know what they know. Then something happened that baffled me. I went to bed one night thinking, "It would be embarrassing to join the Church when kids are smarter on gospel topics." That night I received a very clear message of, "Line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little, there a little." This happened several nights in a row, and I did not have any idea what it meant, I had never heard this saying before. I asked my wife if she knew and she responded that it was scripture, that it is the way the Lord tells us we are to learn. I knew then that the Spirit was working on me, that it is real, and prayers (even casual thoughts) are answered. I went to Church, took the discussions, and was baptized. My testimony continues to grow daily. Indeed, this is the Lord's education of not just life-long learning, but learning is eternal. It is all about relationships; with our Heavenly Father, our family on Earth, our relatives both alive and dead, and with those we meet. All our God's children, needing Him and needing to help to carry out His will.

How I live my faith

I was called 11 years ago to serve as Bishop of our Ward. I learned a great deal about how the Lord strengthens His bishops and what is referred to as the 'mantle' the Bishop receives at his setting apart. It is a 24/7 spiritual window into the Ward. It is constantly reviewing people and events, plans and situations that leads to promptings to act upon. Serving as Bishop brought me very close to the Lord and His work. However, in every calling, from serving in the Primary, in the Scouting program, in bishoprics, as Ward Executive Secretary, there is revelation available from the Spirit to perform the work. We all are entitled to receive revelation for ourselves and those we are responsible in the sight of God. The closer I remain to the influence of the Spirit, the better I live my faith and strengthen my testimony.
