Hi I'm Shirley

I'm a happy person who loves the Lord, the gospel, my family, my friends and chocolate. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and sister. My days are full with family, friends and volunteer work. I love to play racquetball, read, study the gospel, have family and/or friend gatherings. travel, family history/genealogy, teach, play the piano and shop with my sisters.

Why I am a Mormon

My husband and I joined the Church 46 years ago when we had 4 little daughters and knew we needed to find a church and go to church with our children or they might not want to continue going. An older missionary came to work with my husband and eventually taught us the gospel. When I heard the gospel I wasn't converted to the Church right away but knew that everything I was hearing would be good for our family. I decided to be baptized and it wasn't until I had been a member a couple of years that I really gained a testimony of the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith. The first time I read the Book of Mormon, I knew it was true and that Joseph Smith didn't "write" it but had translated it like the book says. That testimony has never left me and it has been my anchor through all the times in my life. We went on to have 5 more daughters and many more experiences in our lives. Before I had even heard of the Church I had questions about why we were here on earth, it didn't make sense that we were here just to have children who had children who had children, that there had to be a bigger purpose. That was one of the wonderful things I learned, that family is important and that we can be together forever and everything we do here to make our family a forever family is what really counts.

How I live my faith

I've learned the importance of family, serving others and living in accordance with good standards and how important that is to a happy life. The Church has given me the opportunity to grow in many ways I had no idea I could! Very quickly after joining the Church, I was able to serve in the children's organization as a teacher and leader. I had been quite shy and couldn't speak before an audience very well, even a small group. I have had the opportunity to grow in that way as I have taught in early morning religion classes for teenagers for 13 years, in leadership positions in adult, youth and children's organizations. I've had the opportunity of teaching adult religious classes in Sunday school and in the women's organization in the Church. All of which has helped me overcome my fear of speaking. I've served a mission with my husband as directors of a visitors' center, and we now are managers of a Church facility that provides for the needs of the congregation in the way of commodities. It has been a rewarding and full experience - learning to serve and help others in a meaningful way. I have also volunteered at the local high school in the ESL program. I know that joining the Church was the best thing we could have done for our family.
