Hi I'm Kevan Gurr

I grew up attending both Vacation Bible School and Primary. I really enjoy coaching football, soccer, and basketball. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in a military family. By the time I graduated from High School, my family had lived in eight different locations, including England and the Philippines. My father was an LDS Protestant Chaplain. He would preach in military Protestant services every Sunday. He oversaw the summer Vacation Bible School program, and he was in charge of the Protestant youth group. My father included all of us (five siblings and Mom) in these activities. I grew up understanding that there where strong, fellow Christians all over the world. I established life long friendships with people of all faiths growing up, and I attend Protestant and Catholic services and activities as often as I could. Another way I found to get involved in each new location we moved was to quickly join an athletic team. These teams provided and instant group of association and identity. I participated in soccer, basketball, football, baseball, and cross-country. After I graduated from High School, I was called to serve a mission to share the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ will all people of faith and non-faith in Houston, Texas. My love for Christ and his everlasting atonement change my life. After my mission, I received a Bachelors Degree in Construction Management, but my heart yearned to continue to daily teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I was hired after graduation to teach seminary and institute for the LDS Church. I am happily married, and my wife and I have five children.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a member of this Church because God guided my life and showed me that this is His path. First, I first came to know for myself that Jesus Christ was resurrected and lives today. I know this because as I repent of my sins all my guilt, anguish, and sorrow for my sins and mistakes are truly taken away, and replaced with joy, peace, and comfort. If Jesus can make me feel this whole again then I certainly can believe that everything else He said to be true. His way is the only way to return to Heaven. I love the Savior so much that I want to know anything he has taught or anything he has done. Second, I have discovered that one of the things He did after his resurrection was He appeared to a fourteen-year boy, Joseph Smith, who was seeking God and His Church for himself. I have learned for myself through communication from the Holy Spirit in prayer and scripture study that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ did in fact appear to Joseph Smith in answer to his prayer. Joseph Smith was told not to join any of the churches on the earth at that time, because although they “have a form of Godliness they deny the power thereof". I have attended many churches in my life, and God continues to reveal to me that this is His path. I love the Bible and Book of Mormon. I have read them both and I have prayed about them and again the Holy Spirit communicated to my heart and mind that these books are scripture and were written to bring me closer to my Savior Jesus Christ. I have also come to know that I am truly a son of God, He loves me, and His greatest desire if for me, my wife, and children to return and live with him again after this life. I know my relationship with my wife will continue after death. In fact, I can't picture doing anything significant in this life or in the next without my wife. I know I will continue to see and love my children and their future spouses after this life. God is Great, Good, Gracious, and full of Mercy, and the only way that we are saved.

How I live my faith

My life long dream of teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ daily has come true. I teach the Bible and Book of Mormon daily to the youth and young adults in our community. Currently, I am teaching at Arizona State University. The Institute of Religion is located in the middle of the University Campus, and people of all faiths attend classes daily. I love seeing the youth and young adults understand and rely on the teachings and atonement of Jesus Christ. I can see a visiable change in the life of a young person as they personally draw near their Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. I also work with young men in the Boy Scouts of America organization during the week. Seeing a young man grow in maturity and patriotism is fulfilling. I also really enjoy coaching my sons and other young men in the community in athletics. Helping mold and encouraging young people to believe in Christ, be patriotic, and develop skills and talents that help them contribute to society in positive ways are some of the things I enjoy most about living my faith.
