Hi I'm Merlin

I am a memeber of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

About Me

I love to be outdoors. It doesn't matter if it is camping, hiking, cross country skiing, caving, rock climbing, kayaking, let me know where and I'm there. I've even taken up fishing lately. While I love to hike in undisturbed wilderness, I also enjoy forgotten industrial areas in town. I have kayaked the entire Phoenix Metro Area [Saguaro Lake to the Gila River], which is hard to do because the Salt River is dry 11 months of the year. My wife and I have three boys. They love scouting, soccer, and basketball. I am an assistant scout master for the local troop. I am also an architect, artist, and I help promote the arts in Mesa.

Why I am a Mormon

Being a member of the church includes the responsibility to nurture others in and out of the church. Many churches I have attended include shaking hands at the end of the ceremony. Then everyone goes home. It appears that no one learns your name. In our church, everyone is expected to fill a job and to shepherd others in their learning. Church is not a once a week event, it is a community of people trying to lift one another.

How I live my faith

I occationally hear friends say that the way they get close to God is through experiences in nature. It usually goes like this. "I go out on the lake and I wake up early on a Sunday morning and look at the sunrise, and I am closer to God than I could ever be in any church." It’s usually followed by, "Those churches are all filled with hypocrites." I usually respond, “Yes! I too I have enjoyed incredible landscapes and amazing wildlife; however, the inspiration created by appricating God's beautiful handiwork does not compare to the feeling of helping one of His children who is in need." Jesus too went to mountain tops, but he came back and taught in the street and in the temple. There are two types of people in church: those that go to be taught and those that go to serve. I srive to be the second type.
