Hi I'm Rick

I was raised in Alaska. I'm a father of five. I'm a civil engineer. And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I've been married 29 years and raised 5 children. I love hanging out with my family most, especially now that my wife and I are "empty nesters' I love my wife's home cooking. My first grandchild was born this year and I can't get enough of him. I've always loved music. I play the guitar, the piano a little, and sing tenor in the choir and old pop songs that make my children smile. I"m one of the lucky ones who enjoys his job and going to work every day. I design highways and airports and then get to help with their construction.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised in the Methodist church and was taught to believe in God. I had some questions and concerns as I became a teenager. I thought there ought to be a prophet in our day, same as in the Bible days. I thought that God was probably a real being, that could move about in the universe, that could come to our planet and talk to us if we were in the right place. When I was 16 my Dad's business partner and his wife who were good friends of the family invited me to go to church with them and see what I thought about the youth program. I went and liked the kids and activities a lot. They invited me to church and I went one Sunday. During the meeting there was a teenager who spoke and I was so impressed by what she said and its impact on me that I could not stop thinking about it. The missionaries offered to teach me more about the church and I agreed to listen. The more I learned about the restored gospel the more I found the missing truth and logic and reality I was looking for. There was a prophet on the earth today. God was a real and tangible being who had the power and knowledge of the universe and had come to earth with his resurrected son Jesus Christ to restore all things that He had promised in our day. I learned many more things about what God was doing in our day to prepare the world for another visit by Jesus Christ. I learned more about who God really is and about how to find lasting peace and happiness and purpose in life in spite of the difficulties I was facing. I thought a lot about all of it, I had to give it the benefit of the doubt and find out if it was really true. I prayed a lot, asking God to confirm what I was believing and feeling to be true and God answered my prayers and gave me the assurance that becoming a member of the Church of Jesus Christ was the right thing for me to do. It has been the best thing that I could ever imagine in my life.

How I live my faith

I smile at people I pass in the bus, street, or store. In my congregation at church I serve as a youth leader and plan and conduct the services and also spend time counseling with those members who are struggling with finances, marriage, or life's challenges in general. I enjoy talking with others about how the church has helped me and my family deal with life's difficulties. I try to unwind before I come home from work and be a kinder and more patient husband and father. I vote regularly and I strive to obey the laws even when I don't particularly like some of them. I volunteer with the boy scout district in our area as the chartered organization representative.
