Hi I'm Paula

I'm a wife and mother of four living in the Pacific Northwest.

About Me

When I was nine years old, my family moved to Hawaii. I graduated from Kahuku High School. My freshman year in college, I met my future husband, Ben. We dated for one year before getting engaged. We were married in the Laie Hawaii Temple a week after my older brother's return from a mission in Los Angeles. After graduating from college, Ben and I lived in Brazil for 6 months teaching. We returned home to Hawaii where we taught. I was an elementary school librarian and reading teacher and Ben taught middle and high school math. After five years of marriage I became a full-time mom when we adopted our oldest son who is Filipino-Caucasian. When he was two weeks old, we found out we were expecting and our second son was born 8 months later. When our boys were still just tiny little guys, we moved to Moscow, Idaho for Ben's additional schooling. Our third child, a girl this time, was born in Moscow. After graduation we moved to Spokane Valley, Washington for Ben's job. Our fourth child and second daughter was born here in Spokane Valley. She is in preschool now. Ben is currently seeking other employment due to budget cuts and I am hoping to teach while my children are in school. I love making things with my hands like bending wire and beading. Our family loves being outdoors we like to hike, play soccer, and the boys enjoy snowboarding in the winter. Ben and I have roughly one billion home improvement projects in various stages of completion. Give or take a few.

Why I am a Mormon

I have been blessed many times in my life. I know God was smiling down on us when he gave us our adopted son. I know he was meant to be ours and I am grateful daily that he made me a mom. I am also grateful for the three children who came our way through pregnancy. I love that the Church teaches us that our Family can be a family forever, and not just while we're on earth. That is important to me. I also appreciate the missionary program, and this "I'm a Mormon" online program is part of that. God loves each one of his children so much and he wants each one of us to be happy. I believe that, by being an active member of the Latter-day Saint or Mormon religion in my home and at church, I am happy. I also believe that God wants us to have peace when we are struggling in life, like we are right now with being downsized. Life is stressful. I believe God answers my prayers when I ask for help. And I know he loves me and my family and wants us to make good choices and become the best people we can be. Reading the Book of Mormon and the Holy Bible give me peace. I love reading about Jesus Christ. I believe he is my Savior. I am so grateful for his life. Tears come to my eyes when I think about how he was willing to die for me and for all of mankind. The atonement of Jesus Christ is a precious gift.

How I live my faith

I appreciate the fact that I have been able to participate in helping my church community in so many different ways over the years. I have worked with the young women and youth program teaching Sunday lessons and planning wholesome activities during the week. I have been president of the Church's women's organization in our church community. This was a busy job but very fulfilling as I helped women who were struggling to get the groceries they needed for their families. I helped with funerals and visited with women in need. My most ambitious and rewarding task was when I made a wedding cake and helped plan a recepion for a woman who is now one of my dear friends. These days I sing a lot at church. And, luckily I don't need a prefect voice to do so. I teach songs to children every Sunday. It's one of my favorite assignments ever because teaching a child truths in a song feels really good. I teach children about Jesus Christ through singing songs. Lyrics teach the goodness of Jesus Christ like "and if I listen with my heart I hear the Savior's voice" and "Jesus said love everyone, treat them kindly too." One song I like is "I am a Child of God." What a precious truth to teach young children! They are special because they are God's children. Another song I like to teach is called "I Am Like a Star" because, even though the lyrics and song are simple, it teaches a great lesson. The words are "I am like a star shining brightly, Shining for the whole world to see. I can do and say Happy things each day, For I know Heavenly Father loves me." But the very best part of teaching songs to children on Sundays is that all four of my own children are there. So for about 30 minutes a week, they see that not only do I have other things on my mind than constantly asking them "Did you clean your room?" like I do all week (and every so often they DO clean those rooms of theirs!) but they see that I use my energy and show my love for the Lord when I teach them.
