Hi I'm Amanda

I'm a mother of 2. I just ran my first marathon. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

After the birth of my second child I was overweight and out of shape. I have always wanted to run a marathon so I thought, why not now? My first run was 1.5 miles and I had to walk a lot of it. I found a beginner's training program online and just started going for it. The training program was 30 weeks (or about 7 months) long. I could not have done it without my very supportive husband who encouraged me when I got up early or stayed up later than I would like to fit my run in on busy days. The training got very hard at the end when I had to dedicate 3-4 hours each Saturday to run. As the marathon day approached I had a goal time in mind, but mostly I just wanted to finish with dignity. It was a grueling race, but I am happy to report that I beat my goal time by 4 seconds! Now that the race is over I continue to run, but I stick to shorter distances!

Why I am a Mormon

Each person must decide how they will live their life. I was raised in an LDS family and have had the Church around me all my life. But when a young person moves out of the house they are free to make their own choices of how they will live. I think my defining moment came as a teenager when I was on a family vacation. I woke up early one morning while the rest of my family slept. I was quite bored, stuck in the hotel room with everyone asleep, so I decided to pull out my Book of Mormon and read. I read for probably 20 minutes or so and thought, "that's good, I've read enough for today." But as I started to close the book I realized that I wanted to keep reading, so I did. I don't remember what I read that day, but I remember how I felt: peaceful, happy, and warm through my body and soul. I knew that the Book of Mormon truly was the Word of God, something that He wanted me to read. Since then I have had those same wonderful feelings confirming that the Bible is the Word of God, that Joseph Smith was one of God's Prophets, that Thomas S Monson is a living Prophet of God today, that the Holy Temple is where families can be sealed for eternity. There are many good churches out there that teach that Jesus is the Christ. But there is no other church that can give me the Book of Mormon and the Temple, two things that I know come from God and that I now could not live without. And that is why I am a Mormon.

How I live my faith

I teach a Sunday School class for 7 and 8 year olds and I minister to 3 ladies at their homes. But by far the most important way I live my faith is with my children. Some of my most spiritual experiences, when I feel the Spirit of God most powerfully, is singing songs about our Savior Jesus Christ with my kids as I put them to bed. It is an amazing experience to hear your 3-year-old daughter tell you that she loves Jesus and to know that she is feeling the Holy Spirit.
