Hi I'm Rick Mcdowell

Happy husband of 25 years, father of 5 awesome children. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a husband and a father of 5 children. After graduating from high school I served a full time mission for my church. Upon my return I could only squeeze out 1 year of college before getting overwhelmingly bored. An old boss convinced me to come back to work for him building homes which became a passion of mine beginning the day I walked on my first job site at the age of 18. I left college to go build homes and have loved being able to identify many homes and neighborhoods which I helped construct. I have worked for my current employer for almost 25 years building the american dream and I love what I do for a living, though i have great regret not gaining a college education. What I love even more is what I have been able to build with my beautiful wife. Married for almost 25 years we have 5 beautiful children who have grown up way too fast. My family knows best that I work very hard. It is difficult to pull me away sometimes. When we get away I play as hard as I work. I love the outdoors, camping, hunting, shooting guns and getting up in the mountains. I love sandy beaches and warm ocean water. I hate disneyland on a busy day. I love to ride in the sand dunes and watch my kids play in the sand. Together time with my family is the best time of all. I owe much of what I am to my parents who taught me to work hard, respect other people and to be honest and dependable. Most important of all to look to my Heavenly Father and acknowledge Him and His wisdom working in my life.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a mormon because I believe that God has a plan for all of his children. I believe that all mankind, every man, women and child that has ever lived on this earth are brothers and sisters, children of our creator. I believe that his plan of happiness involves us learning about Jesus Christ who has become our advocate with our Heavenly Father. I believe that all of His creations witness of his existence, his glory and majesty. I believe that his greatest creation is his children, us. I believe that God is continually trying to speak to each of us. He does not leave us alone to wonder and struggle through life's challenges. I believe that God is the same yesterday today and forever. In ancient times when He lead his children, it was through a prophet. While it is true that God can and does speak to each of us, when he gathers his people to prepare them or to protect them, he does so through a prophet. (amos 3:7) I believe that if there ever was a time when the voice of God needed to be heard by his children on this earth, now is that time. I believe in Jesus Christ, that he is the Son of God who was sacrificed for the sins of the world, that he died and rose from the tomb the third day. He is the Saviour of all mankind. I believe that the greatest event in all human history will be the return of Jesus Christ in all of His glory. I believe that this event will not happen until a prophet is called to gather and prepare Gods children, all who will listen and follow. I believe with every fiber of my soul that that prophet has been called. I believe that the long awaited restoration foretold by ancient prophets and apostles has occurred. I believe that God our Father and his son Jesus Christ appeared to the boy Joseph Smith exactly as he claimed they did. Through him the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored to the earth. The Book of Mormon is not only a testament of Jesus Christ and his life, it is a testament of the divine call of the prophet Joseph.

How I live my faith

Living my Faith is a source of inspiration in my life. Knowing that God loves me, that I am his child and am accountable to him brings real purpose to life. When I put God first in my life things seem to have greater meaning and purpose. I know that my greatest work is with my own family, teaching my children about who they are and what the Lord expects of them is very rewarding. Family time is some of the most important time I spend each day. We read from the scriptures and discuss what meaning they have in our lives. Teaching my family the importance of prayer, that we can turn to our Heavenly Father and ask, thank or acknowledge him in our life. Family time also consists of having fun and visiting with relatives. One of my great rewards is seeing the influence my parents have in the lives of my children, where the lessons of life are reinforced through the words and actions and love of their grandparents. The Lord expects my influence to extend beyond the ties of my own home and family. Spending time each week in our Sunday worship gives me the guidance I need to be an influence for good in all areas of my life. Service to others is the great commission of the Lord to each of us. Service can be a smile, a friendship or a kind gesture. Sometimes service requires much more of our time and talents. Either way the Lord expects us to live our lives as He did, going about "doing good". I live my faith by leaning on the Lord, looking for his guidance and seeking His blessings in my life. The closest I feel to my Father in Heaven is in my quiet moments when I ponder His words in the scriptures or the words and teachings of his servants. Serving in the church or community is a great way for me to show my gratitude to my Heavenly Father for his blessings in my life. Spending time helping others brings me closer to aligning my life with the life of the Savior.
