Hi I'm Mike D

Lived in the Dominican Republic. Volunteered & built an elementary school in Mexico. I manage projects, love rugby & I'm a Mormon

About Me

I enjoy sports and being active. I played Rugby and Lacrosse through high school & college. One day soon I want to run a marathon. This year I will be doing a half marathon. One of my pastimes is building custom furniture from scratch for my family. I reclaim pieces of wood and turn it into something that will be well used. The pieces are nothing fancy but they are a joy for me to do. Cooking is another one of my pastimes. My favorite types of food are Italian, Chinese, Latin American and Bar B Q and I enjoy putting my flavor twist to whatever I do. Cooking is both a way for me to do something nice for others as well as making something everyone will enjoy. Most of my free time is dedicated to my family and I really enjoy the time I have with them to play ball, construct things, draw, write, bake, work on the car, hike or our simple favorite: watch a good movie.

Why I am a Mormon

I know that I have a Father in Heaven. I know his son, Jesus, lives. I know we have a prophet of God on earth today. I am a member of his (Jesus Christ) church because I prayed and received confirmation through the Holy Ghost that the Book of Mormon is true, that God loves me and has a plan for me in this life. The teachings and example of Jesus are a positive influence me in ways I cannot number. All that aside, and looking at this belief with a more scientific approach there is evidence of the truthfulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ all around. Have you ever seen a seed grow? As I garden the seeds begin to sprout. At the beginning when they just start to grow it is difficult to determine what the seed might become. Will it be a weed? Some kind of grass or flower? Or maybe a mighty tree? The mustard seed was the smallest of all the seeds known there and used by those in Israel, yet it grew into "...a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches,” (Matt. 13:31). From that simple seed sprout fruits that show it is a good seed. So to is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. Fruits of: health, virtue, knowledge, organization, support, love, service, and good works are just a few. The bottom line is that it is on me to know. I have tried that little seed in my heart. I actually read the Bible, the Book of Mormon-Another Testament of Jesus Christ, I listened to the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ and I prayed to know if these things were true. I found them to be.

How I live my faith

Involvement with service projects in the communities help me feel grounded. So I do what I can on small projects a neighbor or friend might have or a community wide event. I enjoy visiting members of the church in the area and developing friendships both with church members and others. I help the missionaries in their role as teachers coordinating visits and service opportunities. The church is like a big caring and supportive family-we are not perfect but together we give strength and love that is great. The social activities are a blast to participate in with a lot of good food and fun. Whenever I can, I try to help out those less fortunate than me and when I see someone with a car on the side of the road or an individual asking for money I try to help out the best I can. It is interesting how helping others makes you feel both grateful for what you have and happy. Recently I have experienced being unemployed or underemployed with mouths to feed it could get daunting, and sometimes does but I find solace in working hard, keeping busy and doing service. This experience added some stress to my family but it also gave us an opportunity to draw closer. I spent a lot of time on my knees talking to my father in Heaven, trying to gain perspective and seek both his guidance and strength. Going to the Temple has also been a wonderful blessing because the focus in on the Lord and his plan which has given me a lot of wonderful perspective on what I have or might go through during this life.

How can I know Mormonism is true?

Mike D
This is the diamond in the ruff and the key lies in each of us. The Bible describes in James 1:5-6 that if we "lack wisdom" then we should ask God who will not censor us from knowledge. I believe God loves us and wants to help and will answer our questions. For me I had to pray a lot and really ask God to know specifically if the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is true. The answer didn't come at once for me. I tried to live as the scriptures counseled as I continued to pray. One evening as I prayed I felt love in my heart. It felt 'full" and my mind felt peace. I know the church is true. Show more Show less

Who wrote the Book of Mormon?

Mike D
The Book of Mormon is a fascinating compilation of books written by various prophets discussing their history and experiences that witness of God's teachings and of his Son Jesus Christ. "Mormon" was one of these prophets who compiled the book. The book was later translated by Joseph Smith by the gift of the Holy Ghost. The book is interesting on various levels. For example, it shows the life of a nation and a people from a small origin to a great nation and describes events that transcends the generation. I also enjoy the personal way it is written where I feel like I get to know the people and their struggles and successes. This book has something for everyone. All who read the book are invited various times throughout to read, ponder and pray about the book and that by the power of the Holy Ghost you might know the book is true (see Moroni 10:4 or 2 Nephi 33). I know the Book of Mormon is a true book that will bring us happiness in this life as I follow the teachings given. Show more Show less

Why do Mormons believe in the Bible?

Mike D
The Bible is a wonderful book and I feel grateful to have it given the history of the book. The book is divided in two parts, the first and larger section is written by various prophets prior to the birth of Jesus Christ. It discusses the law and precepts governing the Jews, it foretold of the coming of a Savior and Redeemer and discusses the history of the world from an interesting perspective. There are many great scriptures and stories found in this section. One of my favorite stories is that of Moses who organized an enslaved people and delivered them from bondage teaching and training them as they traveled to a new home. The second part of the Bible is about the birth, life, teachings, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. His apostles share testimony and biography of Jesus testifying with examples and word that he died for us and lives today. This section also foretells of Christs coming again to the earth in a future time. I know the Bible is the word of God as far as it has been translated correctly. The council and teachings found throughout the pages are still profound and directional in helping me be the person I want to be; being happy during this life. Show more Show less
