Hi I'm Jason

I'm a father and husband. I enjoy Fishing and speaking Russian. I'm a professional hacker. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I met my sweeheart at a church dance put on at a college, where whe turned me down to dance initially :) We've now got 4 kids ranging from Elementary to High School. I lived in the Ukraine for 2 years and am very involved with the Russian community. I've been speaking Russian for over 20 years now, and Ukrainian for nearly 15. I really enjoy fishing in my off time (when that actually happens) as well as skiing and snowboarding. Professionally I've been hacking for about the last 10 years, but I've been at it for over 20 as a hobby. I started on BBS's in the late 80's and have done everything from penetration testing to policy writing to managing tool releases and presenting at major conferences. I particularly like working at an assembly level although I don't really get much of a chance to do it. I worked in Telephony and VoIP for a number of years and now do mostly R&D focused Security and Privacy work. My Dad is a police officer of 35+ years and while I didn't follow directly after him, I'm making my contribution to catching bad guys in a different way :)

Why I am a Mormon

While I was born into a Mormon family I have definitely made my own decisions on what my beliefs are. I was 13 when I really had what i would consider an experience that became the foundation of my personal belief. I was really considering the question of whether the church was true and decided to take up a challenge in the Book of Mormon (Moroni 10:3-5) and read the Book of Mormon and then ask God directly if it's true or not. I spent several days thinking and pondering and praying and was still continuing this when I went up to a sout camp in the mountains. We went on a hike one day and as i was returning from the hike and i had a profound, deep and undeniable impression that the men in the Book of Mormon were real men who actually walked in the Americas. And that Joseph Smith really saw the things that he said he did. I have followed the same challenge with other topics and have also gotten responses to those questions. I really appreciate that in the churh each individual is asked to not just believe in someone elses' words, but to find out for themselves.

How I live my faith

I live my religion for me, and as an example to my children. Family is really very central to the Mormons. i spend a lot of time hanging out with my wife and children, teaching the kids, and partnering with Rachel in pretty much everything I do. I help out the missionaries in my congregation, and our home is a home away from home for the young men and women spending 2 years serving God the way that I did.
