Hi I'm Mark

I'm a husband, father of three, a hiker, a hunter, a fire chief and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am happily married and love being with and doing things with my family. I have two brothers, two sons, one daughter and son-in-law, three grandchildren. Families are GREAT. My wife and I enjoy cycling together and playing with our grandchildren. As a retired fire chief for the community in which I live, I find it forever rewarding to service the community. I current teach CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). As a Boy Scout leader, I have had the opportunity to teach and learn from interacting with the youth. I love to backpack and cycle in the Cascade Mountains. It is within these beautiful places that I can find a few days of quite from the worldly noise and share them with friends and family. I enjoy the challenge of hiking to places off the beaten trail.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into a family where my mother was a Mormon and my father had no particular interest in religion. In my family, Sundays were family day (waterskiing, caving, camping and art shows). My mother tried to provide balance in our lives by taking us to church when possible. At age 15 while moving to Washington State, we passed through Salt Lake City. At Temple Square in the visitor center, I stopped at the larger statue of Christ and pondered the question, “Do you really exist?” The answer came quickly and with such clarity that it startled me. I heard a simple soft voice say “yes” Though I was only semi active as a teenage, I never forgot that day in Salt Lake City. When my wife joined the church, soon after we were married, we both committed to live the principles of the gospel. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has provided my family and I with all the tools needed for a happy life. Sundays are still family days, we just choice to do different types of activities now. I’m not perfect, I’m only trying, but I know that God loves me and knows me and has provided his church for me to find answers to my questions.

How I live my faith

My faith in Jesus Christ and my desire to follow his teaching is an extension of who I am. As my wife and I strive to follow the teaching of Christ and to be a good example to each other and our family, we have found the key ingredients to a happy and lasting relationship. I love to teach the youth. It is wonderful to watch the youth I serve turn into outstanding adults. Having served the public for over 31 years in the fire service I have grown to appreciate the peace that the gospel of Jesus Christ offers my family and I. I love to teach emergency preparedness classes through the fire department because my faith teaches that if you are prepared you shall not fear. It makes me feel good to help people help themselves prepare for the physical needs of some of life's challenges. Through my faith, I have been blessed to know that I am not alone and though life can be a sad and difficult place sometimes, I have found peace and protection through the principles of my religion.
