Hi I'm Afton

I'm a widow, mother of 3 children, own a small business, subtitute teach, and love to write. I feel richly blessed. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a woman of faith. I've lived through many joys and challenges in my 40 years of life. I have three independent children. I cared for an ill husband for 9 years in our 20 year marriage. He lost a battle with valley fever meningitis making me a widow in 2010. We have three children who are in junior high, high school, and college. Motherhood is my main focus right now even though I have the strength to run a small window covering business, write novels, fulfill my calling as Relief Society President, attend Bible study with friends, and exercise regularly. I understand the balance between work and play. I genuinely enjoy life and what the Lord has blessed me to experience.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised in the Mormon Church all my life but I wasn't fully converted until I was 26 years old. The Spirit of the Lord hit me like the wind was knocked out of me. I said, "Okay Lord, What do you want me to do?" I was inspired to attend my church meetings regularly and really listen and apply the gospel to my life. I began to understand that I was bought with a price. The price of Christ's atoning sacrifice for me to return to our Heavenly Father. I made the commitment to live in such a way that would qualify me to return to heaven. I continue to learn more about the teachings of Jesus Christ and his gospel. Recently, I studied the Book of Mormon and appreciate the plain and simple testimony that Jesus is the Christ the Savior of mankind. I also studied the New Testament and learned more about Christ's example and how I could be more like him. The Doctrine and Covenants gave me a wealth of knowledge on how to be perfected and prepare for Christ's second coming. I've just started a study of the Old Testament and see how God spoke to ancient prophets. I'm grateful to listen to the modern day prophet who leads and guides us by God's hand today. I'm a Mormon because I believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ. He is the head of the Church and draws us closer to him. Through his example and teachings I'm a happy, peaceful person. God always provides.

How I live my faith

I live my faith simply by following the teachings of Jesus Christ. I learn more about him by reading the word of God in the Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, as well as inspirational testimonies of others who bear witness that He lives. I pray to my Heavenly Father in the name of Christ quite often. A few times on my knees, a few times at meals, and frequently in my heart throughout my busy day. I worship God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost in church meetings on Sunday and in the Lord's Temple where I'm reminded that I am a daughter of a Heavenly Father who loves me. He teaches me how to stay safe in a "Babylonian" world of uncertainty. I spend quality time with my family in Family Home Evenings, Family Counsels, and personal interviews with my children to help navigate them through the pressures of life. I love my family and find joy in the journey of motherhood.

What is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life?

Afton
Our brother Jesus Christ, the beloved and only begotten of our Heavenly Father accepted the call to be the Savior of all mankind. Christ's atonement covers two purposes. One, He delivered us from sin, sorrow and pain in mortality. He sacrificed his life so we could fight Satan's destruction of our souls in mortality. This can be through our own sin or by the trials in life. When we take upon the name of Christ, we become his disciples. As we follow him, he guides us in how to live on earth so we can return to live with him in heaven. The second purpose of the Atonement was to show us the way through death and immortality. Satan persuaded Adam and Eve to partake of the fruit in the Garden of Eden putting upon them death at some point. Christ has delivered those who have gone before us and will deliver us from the grave. Just as he was resurrected, we too will be resurrected one day. Show more Show less
