Hi I'm Derek

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in Canada, I live in Arizona, I'm a husband and a father, I run a small business, I enjoy swimming and fishing, I love serving my community through our local Lions Club, and I'm a Mormon.

Why I am a Mormon

My Conversion: My parents raised me to follow Jesus Christ and be an active Mormon (a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). At 19 years old when I was preparing to serve a mission for the church, I really wanted to know even more deeply of the things I'd been taught--were they really true? I studied the scriptures, including the Book of Mormon, and asked God in sincere prayer if what I'd been taught was true. A warm, spiritual feeling came over me--feelings that I recognized from the Holy Ghost--and I knew that God was confirming that the teachings were true. Since that time, on many, many occasions, the Holy Ghost has continued to confirm for me that I should follow Jesus Christ through the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. How following the teachings of Jesus Christ has helped me: I'm overwhelmed by the blessings that God has given me personally and to our family. And there are likely many blessings I haven't recognized. Every time I make an effort to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, I feel strengthened by Him, and he blesses us over and over again. Following the teachings of Jesus Christ gives me peace, safety, increased faith, and comfort. It has helped my wife and I figure out how to raise our five children, drawing on insights, teachings, and practical advice we get every week at church and personal study.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by doing all I can to emulate the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. One of His teachings was to serve others. For me this means loving and being devoted to my wife, providing for my family and teaching our children how to follow Jesus Christ. I serve in my church congregation by teaching lessons and helping church members share the gospel with their friends. I serve in my community by working with the town to develop an emergency management plan so we're all safe in a disaster. And I serve with our local Lions Club to help provide food to local food banks and do vision and other health screenings. There is great joy in service, and I love to feel that joy. God has blessed me and our family greatly. I can share those blessing through service to others.

What blessings can we receive through the gift of the Holy Ghost?

Almost everyone has felt the Holy Ghost at some time. But there is a difference between experiencing the occasional influence of the Holy Ghost and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. Although the Holy Ghost may temporarily comfort someone or reveal truth to them, the gift of the Holy Ghost is reserved for those who have been baptized and confirmed into Christ’s Church. This gift is the privilege of enjoying the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost conditional upon keeping the commandments. The gift of the Holy Ghost is given when a person is confirmed a member of the Church after baptism by someone having priesthood authority from God. It is given by the person having authority laying their hands upon the head of the person who was baptized and giving them a blessing to receive the Holy Ghost (Acts 8:14-18). Whether or not we then receive this great gift depends on our keeping the commandments of God. Show more Show less
