Hi I'm Lisa

I'm a Mormon. That sentence defines me. I grew up in a suburb of Los Angeles and have moved around the United States.

About Me

I grew up in a large family, an unusual sight in bustling Southern California. I remember driving down the freeway and people would be counting heads in our car. I would raise 8 fingers and yell...8...okay? 5 brothers, 2 sisters made for a crazy loud house but there was always someone around to bug. After I got married my husband and I moved around a lot for his job. Most people thought we were a military family but we actually moved more often than if we had been. I got the chance to know a lot of really good people around the U.S. Baptists, Catholics, Jews, Lutherans and many other people who were doing the same things I was-trying to raise a family and be happy. Our commonalities made us friends, our differences made us more interesting to and gentle with each other. Now I am about to enter another phase in my life...empty nester. It is sad to see my life's work move on and up but I guess our kids have to leave eventually! I love to learn to do just about anything involving my hands and this is what I spend my free time doing. I love to paint, sew, I design and make jewelry, and just about anything else I can find that is new and stretches my imagination. These activites also kept me sane when my kids were little. I love to go to lunch with my friends and hash out our lives together...they keep me grounded and they support me.

Why I am a Mormon

I was lucky...I came from a great home. My childhood was full of happy memories and kind, loving parents. My parents raised me to be a Mormon. So I was. But like many other girls, I didn't like to be told what to do. So eventually I had to make my own decision about what my value system was, how I saw God's place in my life, and what beliefs I wanted to pass on to my own children. I remember putting my faith to the test by reading my scriptures and pondering what my Heavenly Father wanted me to do. The answer came very quietly to my heart over a period of a few months. I knew then that I was where I was supposed to be and I have never looked back since. There are many questions about life that don't have answers but I know that someday we will be made aware of everything. For now I live by my faith that God lives and will reveal all to His children in His time. I know that God loves each one of us. He doesn't see me any differently than he sees someone who is living a life contrary to everything he teaches us. He just wants us all to find Him and return to live with Him. He loves us all. I know that everyone on earth is my brother or sister and I should treat them as such. This is what I strive to get better at doing every day. I'm a Mormon because I have come to KNOW for myself that what God teaches us about His church is true. He has given us modern day prophets to guide us just as he gave His children during the Old Testament times a prophet to guide them. He hasn't left us alone...He loves us too much to do that. I have promised Him to follow those prophets for I know that they will lead me to truth and light. I have lived through many difficult trials that have tested my faith and seem to have cut me to shreds but when I look for Him, I feel God's hand in my life and know that He is always with me. He doesn't take trials away but He holds our hand through them.

How I live my faith

For the past 7 years I have donated my time advocating for foster children. I am their voice in court and I fight for their rights. These children are not as lucky as I was growing up. They don't have the security and safety of a loving home. Some are abused, most grow up in danger. I know that someday God will take their pains away and I cling to that. For now, I try to do my best to make sure they get the best life they can. One evening a man from church came to my house and asked me if I would be willing to teach a class each morning to the teenagers. What? Every day? Early in the morning? About the scriptures? Talk about humbling me to pray for the Lord's help! So now I get up 4 mornings a week before the rest of my household and teach the youth of our church about the scriptures and about their relationship with their Heavenly Father. It takes me several hours a day to prepare each lesson but I am learning so much and I find that the more I study about Christ, the closer I get to Him. These kids are so good and know so much that I feel I am learning from them more than I am teaching them. They are examples for good in my life and remind me that we all have the inner strength to withstand the temptations the world offers. I know that Satan lives just as God lives. His purpose in life is to destroy us and rob us of happiness and joy. He is doing this by destroying our families. So I spend lots of time with my children. I have been lucky to have a husband who supports me in staying home to raise our children. I have friends who cheer me on when life gets tough.
