Hi I'm Mark McAvoy

I am a retired US Army soldier, a defense systems engineer, a husband and father of five and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a husband and a father of three sons and two daughters. I enjoy political discussions but I also, on occastion, write poems. I like to work with computers and enjoy music that is easy on the ears. As a retired soldier, I have lived many places to include Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, Georgia, Virginia, Colorado, New Jersey, and Germany.

Why I am a Mormon

When I was a teenager growing up in Texas, I had a profound religious experience in direct answer to a prayer. It was something I treasured in my heard but did not know how Although I knew of the mormons for many years, I never stopped to learn about their beliefs. In fact, because of the area where I was raised, I held them in disregard. When I finally was placed in a position to hear their story without tuning them out, I was intrigued. The story of revelation from heaven aligned with my religious experience from many years earlier.

How I live my faith

I served in the military because my father was a WWII veteran and former POW. I believe that patriotic service is part of the gospel requirement. If it is required then "Greater love hath no man that this, that he lay down his life for his friends". I now serve in a church leadership position and want to provide help to the members of my church and of my community to the extent they need it. If they don't need my help then I just want to be a friend. I grew up in a home where we knew our neighbors and helped them in their needs. That is how I want to be part of my neighborhood. After many moves throughout my life, I think this will be our last home and I want to make an impact. I particularly love the church program for home teachng. This has allowed me to meet and know many families I would not have known otherwise. I have lasting friendships all over the US because of my church service.
