Hi I'm Owen

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Being raised by a religiouse [?] dysfuncial family, my dad was a So. Baptist & mom was a So. Methodist, you can see that religion was a sore spot with them. So as a compromise my younger brother & I were raised as Presbyterians here in our small town. After my service in the Corps in '60' I married my wife and w/ a former girl friend roomate who had married an old classmate got together and socialized somewhat. They had joined The "Mormon" church and one day in the summer of '62' they invited us to church w/ them. My hi school years were mainly filled w/ some mischief and 'Ag' but I had good upright friends so serious trouble was not our lot. Besides in a town of about 7000 people if you got into 'BIG' trouble they would take matters in hand and by time you got home your parents would add to your woes, sound familiar? The Marines took some of the 'macho' startch out of me and I learned my way well.

Why I am a Mormon

When our friends invited us to church one Sunday I had met and worked w/ a 'Mormon' some years earlier so what I knew was almost 'O' except that the didn't drink 'booze' or smoke and had some food habits not so unusual but 'different'. We were introduced to the 'Ward' Bishop & two Stake Missionaries who convinced us that looking into this 'religion' wouldn't be too hard on our past beliefs, since my wife and I were of different faiths, so we would listen to what they had to say. When they came to our apt. they mentioned a Book of Mormon but I said that if they wanted to discuss religion that we would like them to stick to our old King James version of the bible. So for 7 weeks they pretty much stuck to our wishes [w/ an occasional reference to the Bof M] they spent many extra hours w/ us and our K.J. bible and thoroughly convinced us that the [now called] Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints was indeed the restored church of God on the earth. It was all in there and we had never been taught or heard preached that the Church of Christ as He founed in his mortal existence had Apostles & Prophets etc., etc. was no longer on the earth until a man known as Joseph Smith had his most glorious encounter with Heavenly Father and the Savior Jesus Christ. The Life and trials of the Prophet Joseph is one of heartbreak and inspiration and blessings to all the children of men.

How I live my faith

I live my life through my service as a greeter at the door to all new and regular members as they attend church, I also direct all new people to any appropriate class or other activity, I help w/ the genealogy class, I home teach, w/ my companion Loren, 4 families some w/ several children and some elderly couples presenting a lesson from our General Authorties or the Book of Mormon and other scripture sources, I am the Boy Scout troop comm. chair. helping our youth in advancing towards, hopefully, their Eagle  badge, I am the second asst. to our Hi Priest Group Leader and am responsible for several other Hi Priests in doing their home teaching and that the families we are assigned to are well taken care of and any needs they may have either temporaly or spiritualy looked after. We are responsible for all widows, single families w/ children, the elderly and any we feel need our help. My civic activities cover maimly my service w/ the Marine Corps League of which is for funerals for any service pesonel old or young, other veterans in need as homeless or infirmed, and our crowning efforts to supply Christmas presents for the thousands of needy children in our county through the Toys for Tots program founded by the U.S.M.C. reserve back in the '50's.
