Hi I'm Barry

I am a carpenter, a builder, an urban farmer, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in a home with six siblings. We lived in Illinois twice, Michigan, and Texas. I have since lived and worked in: Santiago Chile, Washington, Oregon, Utah, Baja México. I feel like I am a Latino with a Gringo shell! My wife and I are raising our children in Arizona (for now). I am an urban farmer! I have 23 fruit trees in my yard, and on over 2,500 square feet - in my own yard and in my neighbor's unused yard - I grow vegetables. I raise chickens as well. I find this helps our family to not only become self-sufficient, it also helps to develop a strong work ethic in my six children. I design and build anything from cabinets to midrise condominium resorts in México. I love to design and to build anything with natural materials, and am in awe of what God has created.

Why I am a Mormon

I know God lives and that His son is Jesus Christ. I have always known it...like I was born with the knowledge. My parents became mormons before I was born, and my parents raised me in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. As a teen I found out for myself, through meaningful prayer and obedience to God's commandments, that Jesus really has restored His complete gospel and His church to the earth. I am a mormon because I know that this truly is the Church of Jesus Christ, and I know it because God Himself has made it known to me...and I cannot and will not deny it or ignore it!

How I live my faith

Maybe the greatest way I live my faith is by being a faithful husband and an involved father. We read the scriptures and pray together as a family every day. Monday night is our "family night" where we council together and enjoy time together as a family. We eat our meals together and talk about what is going on in our lives. We work hard to make individual time with each child. My wife stays home to raise our children in an effort to raise children who are prepared to be successful in their own lives and who can help and serve others. Most of all, we give them opportunities to learn about the gospel of Jesus Christ and feel His Spirit so they can know for themselves the importance of Jesus' role as Savior and Redeemer. I love those around me! I thoroughly enjoy listening to others tell me about their lives and beliefs, where they have been and where they wish to go. I know and love so many people who are of other religions, or of no particular religion, and respect and defend their right to believe or not. I am happy when others practice their beliefs, and work to live good values. I have had the joy of helping others find that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints builds on their correct beliefs, and adds what might be missing from the good religion they have now or grew up in.

What do Mormons believe concerning the doctrine of grace?

Whether dealing with personal struggles, with new births, or with deaths of friends and relatives, I find such comfort in knowing God lives. Because I know that He lives, I know that the scriptures are true. Because I know that the scriptures are true, I know that I am a spirit son of God, my Father in Heaven. I know He sent us here to be tried and tested. I know He sent us here to struggle and live by faith. I know He sent His son Jesus Christ to earth to pay the price for my sins, and to feel all pains and sickness and lonliness, and do all that is necessary to offer me His grace to not only overcome sin and be able to live with Him after this life...but also to have His grace to help me where I fall short in dealing with life itself. Jesus really is the key to understanding where I came from, why I am here, and where I will go after this life. And I bless His name for offering Himself on my behalf...and giving me that which I could never earn on my own. Show more Show less
