Hi I'm Derek

I'm from Thornton, Colorado. I'm a husband and a father. I'm a financial services representative. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in Thornton, CO and went to Horizon High School. I was born into a family with amazing parents and 3 younger sisters. I was the oldest and the only boy, so I was a natural protective big brother to my sisters. I love sports. Baseball is my favorite sport and the Colorado Rockies are my team! I help coach high school baseball and love to help those young adolescence learn the game. I also enjoy officiating high school basketball. I am married and my wife and I love being parents to our first child, an abosolutely precious little girl! I work in the financial services industry and I really enjoy helping people plan for their retirement and for life’s unexpected turns. I absolutely love living in Colorado and enjoying the beautiful great outdoors that this state provides! I try to find ways to enjoy the small and simple moments in life. One of my favorite things to do is to simply sit and enjoy a summer evening with my family!

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into the church. My parents did their best to teach me what they believed to be true. Growing up I tried to be obedient to my parents. While I was in high school I began to wonder what the "Truth" regarding religion really was, so I began to really delve into the scriptures and search out for the truth. I questioned the principles I had been1 taught my entire life. I remember vividly, one night, when I was about 16 years old laying in my bed and not being able to sleep because of the questions in my mind. So I arouse from my bed and hit my knees and began to pray. I asked God if the Book of Mormon was the word of God. I asked if Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God. I asked if there was truly a living prophet on the earth today. I asked if what I had been taught regarding my religion throughout my life was true. The answer I received is something I cannot deny. Each time I asked a question I stopped and listened to the feelings of my heart. I received the most amazing and special feeling I had ever experienced, to that point in my life. I knew that these feelings were not figures of my imagination. The ground didn't quake, nor did I see an angel, but the feelings were of love and peace and I had a great burning in my heart. I knew that the feelings I felt were the feelings of the Holy Ghost. I knew this because of what I had been taught concerning the feelings of the Holy Ghost, as stated in Galatians 5:22-23 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance". From that day on, I have tried to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. I am not perfect, but I am grateful that through Jesus Christ's atoning sacrifice I can repent of my sins and be forgiven. I know that through the fullness of the gospel our families can be together forever! I know Christ lives! He knows and loves all us! Heavenly Father knows our needs and He hears and answers all our prayers!

How I live my faith

I try to live a Christ-like life. I do my best to attend church every Sunday. In our church we try to perform Christian service also. I visit 4 families in our area every month. In these visits I share a Christian message and try to see if there are any needs that family may have. I have learned to love these families and I would do anything for them. I have also been given the responsibility of helping those in my area with their employment needs. In this time with high unemployment rates this has been quite a challenge, but one that I truly love. I love to help people improve their resume, interview skills or negotiating skills. The church really has great resources for all people at their website ldsjobs.org. I get such satisfaction from seeing people who have been struggling without a job improve their skills and land a job that allows them to provided for themselves and their families. I also love reading the scriptures; both personally and as a family and I strive to read them every day. I know that the Bible and Book of Mormon are the word of God! I know that when we read them and apply them to our own lives God really does speak to us! I draw great strength in my daily life from reading and pondering the scriptures. I also love to pray daily, again, personally and as a family. The old saying, "the family the prays together, stays together" is really true. I know that our Heavenly Father hears and answers our every prayer. He may not always answer it the way we would want or expect but I know that He hears and answers our every prayer. I know that life is not just about a single enlightening event that helps us realize that Jesus Christ is our savior and redeemer but that we must also strive to live a Christian life the rest of our lives. I love to serve others and strive to find a way to serve someone every day, whether it’s in my own house or out in the world. I know that Christ lives and that he loves all of us!
