Hi I'm Justin

I live in Arizona, I am a college counselor, a PhD candidate, and I’m a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up amongst the breath taking trees, rivers, streams, and valleys of Oregon and it remains the backdrop of my youth as a boy scout and oldest of 4 siblings. My parents have been married for 40 years and they are my heroes to this day. I moved to Arizona in my early twenties and married a few years later only to experience an unfortunate divorce toward the end of my twenties. I share time with my son and I am happily remarried. My family is complete now with 2 daughters and the majority of my time goes to my beautiful wife and kids. However, when a few rare moments permit, I love to play soccer and racquetball! To make a living, I am a college counselor for a non-denominational Christian university. I have been a counselor for 10 years and I find great joy in helping others find their purpose through an education coupled with Christian principles. I hear many stories every day of people who have overcome great adversity with their faith in Jesus Christ. I really enjoy pointing out that it is that same faith in Christ that will give them the strength they need to rise to the challenge of changing their economic condition with a college education while transcending the human condition with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born a Mormon but my own personal conversion has happened many times starting in high school through today. The Lord has challenged my convictions through high school persecution, friendships, divorce, deep personal loss, marriage, and even my own kids! The refiner’s fire always forces me to rise above what I think I am capable of and lean on the Lord for peace and strength. Through times of great gain or personal loss, the Gospel of Jesus Christ has and always will be transcendent for me and those around me. I love my Savior and I am deeply grateful for the sacrifice He made for me. I am ever aware of His love and presence in my life and I would not be the man, counselor, husband, or father I am today if not for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

How I live my faith

My PhD dissertation is centered on the concept of servant leadership. Servant leadership as a management and leadership philosophy parallels the example of Jesus Christ where the hierarchy pyramid of leadership is turned upside down and the faithful and meek are at the top. During my tenure as a counselor for universities, I have been given the opportunity to be a manager for counselors for 5 years. I have learned and proven the truth behind Matthew 25:40 when He said “…Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” I love serving others because it fills my heart with joy and it is intrinsically reciprocal without expecting it to be. This service focus is what drives many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and I am so proud to be a part of that.
