Hi I'm Melissa

I'm a teacher, an aunt, a wannabe writer and artist, and a mormon. I'm a follower of Jesus Christ.

About Me

I live in a small community nestled in Western WA, where I teach elementary school and spend time with my family (especially nieces and nephews). When I'm not teaching or with family, I love visiting friends, running, painting and writing. I get really excited about food, smoothies, camping, clear starry skies, the ocean, window seats, Spanish & Portuguese, and roadtrips. Life is so beautiful, and I believe there is much good in the world. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by all I want to do and be and see, but I find renewal in making time for daily prayer, reflection, and quiet time alone. This draws me back to my priorities and brings me peace.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because, simply put, I want to follow Jesus Christ. His gospel really is the source of joy in my life; I'm happiest when I feel I'm working with Him to love and serve others. I'm coming to know Him better through The Book of Mormon (another testament of Jesus Christ). When I read The Book of Mormon (or other scriptures, including The Bible), I feel a softening in me. I have come to recognize those feelings as one of the ways God communicates with me. My relationship with my Heavenly Father brings me peace and direction. Most major decisions in my life have been made through a process of prayer and seeking, and that has brought me closer to Him. I'm a Mormon because I really believe that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is His organization here on Earth. I know He lives, is real, and loves me.

How I live my faith

I live my faith mostly in simple ways: Calling friends, following feelings and ideas I get about how to help others, and through daily scripture study and prayer. I try to live with honesty and to love others the way God loves them (I've got a long way to go on that one!). I also have led the music for our local children's organization, which I really enjoyed. When we sang together about how they are Heavenly Father's children and how much He loves them, I was always touched. One children's song in particular, called "Child's Prayer," invites children to pray to God and promises that He is there and that He hears their prayers. Every time we sang that song, I was almost overcome with a sense of His love for them. It made me think of my own relationship with Him and the many times He has answered my prayers. I really want children--and everyone--to feel and know that they are important and that God is their loving Heavenly Father, and they can talk with Him. He loves us.
