Hi I'm JB

I was born in Salt Lake City, but I've lived in New Mexico, Texas, and Idaho. I'm an engineer, a publisher, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am an electrical engineer and a publisher. I've lived in Utah, Texas, New Mexico, and Idaho (Finland, too, if you include my mission!). I enjoy camping and reading; and I really enjoy helping people! I enjoy remodeling houses and buildings and I've been known to spend a little down time playing video games so old today's children don't know them! My wife and I have never had the blessing of children, but the Lord has blessed us to work with the Youth of the Church throughout our lives --- and that's a great blessing!

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into the Church, but my testimony of the Church and the gospel of Jesus Christ is all my own. I have investigated other churches and found the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be the only true church on the Earth. It adheres to the Bible and the commandments and teachings of Jesus Christ better than all others. I say this not only because of prayer and fasting, which has blessed me with a firm testimony of Jesus and the Church, but also because of my experiences including the privilege of using spiritual gifts including knowledge, wisdom, faith, discernment, tongues, healing, and prophecy. I know Jesus Christ is the living son of our Heavenly Father. I know that He is the head of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the only true church on the Earth.

How I live my faith

I am a branch president, which is similar to a Bishop but leads a smaller congregation. I received my call to serve in December 2005 and I have enjoyed every moment of my service. I'm proud of my congregation! In the last two years we have doubled our membership through exciting missionary and reactivation work. I enjoy teaching and counseling with our members and reaching out to our community to help people overcome the challenges of their lives. I am grateful for the privilege of service and the great people I meet and work with. I live my faith by extending the blessings of the Lord to everyone I can. I love my Church. I love my congregation. And I love my community!

What is done with the tithing that Mormons pay?

People have a lot of misconceptions about how the Church uses tithing. It is used to maintain our buildings including construction, utilities, and major maintenance (weekly cleaning is provided by volunteers in our congregations). It is used for instructional materials and handbooks. It is also used for basic budgetary expenses such as funds used for congregational administration and activities. It has many uses, but in short, tithing is used to operate the Church. Tithing is not used to help the poor and needy. Fast Offerings are used for that purpose. Show more Show less

Why are Mormons asked to donate 10% of their income to their Church?

The Church needs tithes to operate, but I pay tithes simply because I was commanded by the Lord to do so (D&C 119). I have faith that even during those times when I have so little that paying tithes appears too much to ask, the Lord will bless me for my obedience. And He has done so many times. What does Mormonism teach regarding baptism?

I once read an article where someone claimed that baptism was not a saving ordinance; that it was unimportant and only our faith was needed to be saved. I felt sad! I know that the Bible teaches that baptism is required to be saved (Mark 16:16) and that the word "faith" describes the actions we take to prove our hopes and belief (James 2). We believe in obedience to all the Lord's commands, including His commandment to be baptized (Matt. 28:19; Acts 10:44-48). I know baptism is a holy ordinance required for salvation. My baptism demonstrated my faith in Jesus Christ and commitment to His gospel. It bound me to Him with a covenant that if I obey His commandments, He will forgive me and welcome me home to our Heavenly Father. Show more Show less
