Hi I'm Darnell

I grew up in a small town in Oregon, now I'm the sports editor at the Lincoln Journal Star in Nebraska. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a sports fan, so it's a good thing I'm a sports editor, huh? I was the beat writer for BYU football for eight years before this amazing opportunity at the Lincoln Journal Star in Nebraska came up. My family is still in Utah as we prepare to sell our house, so I miss them. My son just left on an LDS mission to Georgia, and I miss him, too.

Why I am a Mormon

My mother, who passed away four years ago from cancer, converted my father to the LDS faith in 1960. So I was born into the church and we lived our faith as best we could. In our small town in Oregon, it was well known I was a Mormon. Sometimes my friends would say, "Oh, you're a Mormon, you can't smoke, or drink or any of that stuff." And I would say, "I could do those things, but I choose not to." There's a big difference between "can't" and choosing to follow your faith.

How I live my faith

It's more than just going to church on Sundays. It has to be. I've served as a teacher in the Elder's Quorum and in primary, and as a counselor for the young men in my church callings. Since I am so far away from my family right now, we use Skype to communicate. On Sundays we read scriptures together using this technology. It helps us stay close to each other.
