Hi I'm Ryan

I'm a dad. I love my family. I'm a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

About Me

I grew up in Idaho, lived in Brazil for 2 years as a missionary, graduated from BYU, and currently work as an electrical engineer. I have a great wife and 4 great kids. I enjoy politics, college sports, and reading. I also love learning about American history and the principles and ideas that inspired the founding fathers. I believe it is very difficult to find a better way to spend my time than letting my kids pick something they would like to do with me and just enjoying being with them.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a faithful member of the Church because I love Jesus Christ. I am a Christian. I have felt His love for me over and over again. I know that He is the Son of God. He lived a life of perfection. His love was so pure that He endured incomprehensible persecution and suffering and pain in order to pay the price for me to have forgiveness and hope. As a teenager, I read the entire Book of Mormon. I understood that knowing whether that book is true is the key to knowing whether Joseph Smith was a true prophet and whether this Church was really re-established on earth by the resurrected Christ. After reading the whole thing, I prayed and asked Heavenly Father if it was true. I asked Him to send the Holy Ghost to witness to me if it was true. I expressed my willingness to be a missionary and follow the teachings of the Church if I knew it was true. I did not receive an answer the first time I prayed. For several nights in a row, I would read a few pages and then pray once again, asking for confirmation. Still nothing. One night, I got home late from a Church dance and everyone else in my house was asleep. I felt a strong desire to pray again, this time more fervently. I kneeled down beside my bed and told Heavenly Father that I really, really wanted Him to send the Holy Ghost so that I could know the truth for sure. I told Him I was willing to stay on my knees all night if I had to. I waited on my knees, mostly in silence, but periodically asking again for an answer. After what I think was over an hour, I received my answer. I had a strong feeling of love and peace and joy fill me. It lasted for probably about 30 seconds. I felt so overjoyed! I remember thinking how cool it was that I was able to kneel in my bedroom and talk to God, possibly millions of miles away, and He sent His love and those feelings to answer my question. I believe I will eternally be held accountable for receiving that witness. Like Paul, I hope to be faithful to the end.

How I live my faith

I live my religion by trying my best to be a good person. I treat my wife with love and respect and honor her as my best friend and the greatest person I know. I love my kids and try to help them learn what is important in life. My wife and I teach them about God and His plan. We teach them about Jesus Christ. We read the scriptures or stories from them every day. We pray each day as a family. I respect other people's right to believe however they choose. I don't try to force my religion on others, but I do try to give others a chance to ask me about it if they are interested. Every 6 months, we have General Conference where the prophets and apostles share inspired messages with us. I have always enjoyed watching or listening, but I have never been very good at reviewing these messages during the months in between. I've done better since last General Conference and I have felt like this has really helped me notice specific things I can do better in my life. It has helped me to think about Jesus more often. I think paying attention to and responding to what the current prophet is teaching us is an important way to live my religion.
