Hi I'm Jothan

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I work right now as a civil engineer analyzing traffic data for a regional transportation planning agency in Arizona. My wife Janae and I have been married for more than six years and we have a beautiful five year old boy and a perfect little three year old girl. Janae and I met in a rock climbing gym and we enjoy biking, climbing, camping, and pretty much anything we can do outside. On a good month we'll get out of the city to do something fun in nature just about every week.

Why I am a Mormon

I once heard someone says that God seems to give us one reason to doubt along with a thousand others to believe. My faith is a choice and the bottom line in why I choose to believe is that the exercise of my faith actually work. There is and has always been in me a yearning for spirituality, a yearning to be closer to God. I don't consider myself a righteous man, but I feel in my heart a desire to be more holy and better than I am now. The principles of faith, repentance, and the continued striving to turn my heart to God have for me been specifically facilitated by what I learn in listening to the words of living prophets, and in reading the Book of Mormon. I can't say enough about the Book of Mormon. As a seventeen year old boy, full of pride and self centered ambitions, I began what was for me a simple experiment to see if reading the Book of Mormon would actually make a difference in my life. I was at the time not attending church but felt some inspiration from the testimonies of my young men leaders at church Witt Reed, Steve Johnson, and Chris Hanson. For three months I read the book without missing a day, and then noted at the end of the three months how each of my major endeavors and my relationships with my mother and others were better than they had ever been. The experiences that led me to full activity in the church and to service as a Mormon missionary didn't come for a few more years, and yet the seeds of faith had been rooted in my heart as a seventeen year old boy with that book. I had felt then, and many times since, the softening, humbling, and the edifying effect of time spend learning about Christ in the Book of Mormon. I believe in Christ, and I believe in the Atonement through which we can each be redeemed from our fallen and sinful condition to a higher and holier glory with God. I feel a hope through the grace of Christ of being together as an eternally family with my wife and children and with others I love most in this life.

How I live my faith

In church I serve right now as an assistant ward clerk where I'm responsible for compiling the annual history for our congregation along with a few other things. I'm also serving as the employment specialist helping members of our congregation who may need to find or improve their employment. One of the most amazing and rewarding experiences of my life have been the two years I spent teaching and serving as a full-time Mormon missionary during 2001 and 2002 in Southern Ontario, Canada.
