Hi I'm Richard

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was born the third of six children, the oldest boy, to parents who loved and sacrificed greatly for my well being and progress. I was raised in a small coal mining community with a rich abundance of kind, good hearted people. I can remember countless numbers who had a significant influence by their acts of generosity and kindness in my youth. When I was 19 years old, I took my first commercial plane ride, it was two parts and over 14 hours long. It was exciting to see an entirely different world was less than a days journey away. Yet, I still found the same type of kindness and goodness even in a foreign land. Since that travel experience, I have had the opportunity to travel many more times and enjoy the diversities of culture and the goodness of people abound. I am now an optometrist, and I love what I do. I love looking into people's eyes and making sense of their vision complaints and problems. I am also a father of three wonderful children and the lucky husband to a beautiful wife. I like to spend my free time with my family, going on errands, working in the yard, running, reading, and playing an occasional round of golf.

Why I am a Mormon

I have found through my life's experiences that there is a constancy of truth among many religions. When we live our lives in accordance to these truths, there are promised blessing that come. When we live our lives contrary to those truths, something is lost, maybe not at the moment or even down the road, but something inside us changes. As I apply these truths in my life, I have felt joy and happiness. I feel that there is a greater purpose to life and that there is hope beyond what I can see with my eyes. I believe in a loving Heavenly Father who loves all of his children. He has provided a way for each of us to know through their own choices what is true and real. He sent his perfect son, Jesus Christ, to show us the way to live and return to live with him again.

How I live my faith

I have found in my life that when I am helping others in one way or another, I have the greatest joy. This might be as simple as a phone call to say I was thinking about someone or helping someone who is having a hard time with life. I feel that selfless service is one of the magical secrets to happiness in this life. As a family, we attend our church meetings every Sunday. Then at dinner time, we usually have a discussion about what the kids learned during their lessons. It is always fun to hear what the younger kids get out of the lessons they were taught. "We should love one another, and no running in the halls at church." On Monday nights, we have a family night where we gather together as a family and sing a song, pray and have a short lesson prepared by a member of the family. The kids look forward to their chance to share this message when it is there turn. We, as a family, have learned that we are happiest when we live the teachings of Jesus Christ in our home. When we show love for one another, many of the obstacles of life disappear.
