Hi I'm Glenn Shields

I'm a Mormon. I am a retired upper management business executive.

About Me

Hello, I'm Glenn. I was raised for 15 years in the Presbyterian Church in Saskatchewan, Canada. Then in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS). I am a Mormon ! I attended BYU (Brigham Young University) and completed my MBA Graduate School studies there. I served a voluntary 2 1/2 year mission for the LDS Church in the South Pacific: French Polynesia/Tahiti. I learned both French and Tahitian. I met my wife at BYU. She is from Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. We have 3 married children and 22 grandchildren. Our two oldest grandsons are serving missions: one in Argentina and the other in southern Chile. We have lived in Utah, Michigan, Los Angeles, CA; and now for the past 40+ years in the Phoenix, Arizona area. And no, I have never become accustomed to the summer heat ! I have been involved in upper management all of my professional life. I am retired and over 74 years of age (2012). Three years ago my wife and I were called to serve as volunteer Senior Christian Missionaries for the LDS Church in England for 18 months. We loved the people and our experiences there. The last 11 months we were the directors of the London Temple Visitors' Centre, approx. one hour south of London and close to Gatwick airport. Here we hosted people from England, the UK, Europe and all over the world. Among other things, the Centre had a beautiful 8' statue of the Christus, where we could share our testimony of His resurrection and living reality. Fantastic !

Why I am a Mormon

The first time I read the booklet "The Joseph Smith Story", I had the strongest feeling within - I knew it was true ! And The Book of Mormon, Another Testimony of Jesus Christ; it helps to clarify the teachings in The Holy Bible and verifies that the Bible is the word of God. It also answers many of life's questions and people's searchings. How great it is to have this 'Book' to correct the influence of false traditions that exist in many churches, all teaching from the same Bible. Just as I believe The Bible to be a sacred record of God's dealings thru His prophets in ancient Israel, so I believe The Book of Mormon to be a sacred record of God's dealings thru His prophets in ancient America. The Book of Mormon is the best friend the Bible has ! To know that Jesus Christ, as a resurrected living being, continues His work today thru living Prophets and Apostles, that He has re-established His church ! Yes, it is a revealed religion ! God did not stop speaking to mankind just because His word went to press ! In the Bible, Deuteronomy 4: verse 2, it reads: "...Ye shall not add to the word which I command you...." The Lord does 'not' say that "HE" cannot add to His word, which he does thru living prophets ! As a matter of fact, we believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and that He will yet reveal many things pertaining to the kingdom of God. What comfort these great messages give. God is the same yesterday, today and forever. No, I have not seen Him (since the day of my birth), but as I read the scriptures; I know how He thinks, what He wants me to do, I know what He looks like from the testimony of others who have seen Him. The scriptures are very clear about the fact that we lived with God in heaven before our earth life began. He is our Eternal Father. We are His spiritual offspring having a mortal experience. I know His word, and the straight and narrow way, and how to follow it ! The path is clear.

How I live my faith

I am not shy about letting others know that I am a Christian, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The word 'saint' here denotes a believer in and a follower of Jesus Christ and His teachings. I believe in and worship the God of Heaven and the Lord Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer. I believe in a 'Plan of Happiness - A Plan of Salvation', where families and all who have ever lived on the earth can live together forever if they so live and choose. 'All of mankind' will have the opportunity to hear The Gospel of Jesus Christ, and accept it if they choose. The whole purpose of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is to "Invite" others to come unto Christ. At the same time, we allow all people to worship how, where, or what they may. I have served in many capacities in the church: a teacher, a counselor, a lay minister (Bishop) helping young single adults who have graduated from high school, and visiting three to five families each month to leave a spiritual message and care for their well being. I try to be prepared to give simple answers to profound question to the youth of today. Q: How can there be a God who allows calamities and natural disasters to occur ? A: We see the hand of God in the world working thru the hands of mankind. Those who come to the aid of, and render service and relief, compassion and comfort, to those who suffer or have been afflicted by these natural disasters. Such provoke people to God. They have nowhere else to go. Q: How do you account for dinosaurs and the creation ? A: Plants and animals could have lived and died for millions of years before man. There was need for the organic material to sustain life for other plant life. Many things lived and died on this planet before the earth was "fit for man." It was being prepared for Adam. When Adam was placed on the earth, then begins the reckoning of 'man's time." Time does not exist in eternity. Time is only an earthly measurement.

Do Mormons regard the Bible as Holy Scripture and the word of God?

Glenn Shields
Oh my, 'Yes' we do ! What would we do as a human race without our beloved Bibles. It is holy scripture - the word of God. A record of His dealings thru His holy prophets from the beginning of time, to ancient Israel. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is a great 'Bible Based' Christian Church ! I hear others, and the media, telling everybody what I believe. Now let ME tell YOU what I believe: I am first and foremost a CHRISTIAN ! 'Mormon' - that's your 'tag line'. I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ ( Latter Day members ) - a "Great Bible Based " Christian Church. Yes, we are a revealed religion ! We do believe in living Apostles and Prophets ! Those who kneel in the ritual of religion, based on those who have talked with God, seem to think it odd or irrational that God can still talk to His servants that we and He call Prophets ! Yes, even in our day. Rev. 22:18 & also Deut. 4: 2 Only talks about 'man' that shall not 'add' to these words / records ( and we might add - 'nor take away from their Clarity'. However, it does not say that God himself cannot add to His words ! He can add whenever He so chooses. And He would so thru His holy prophets ( Amos 3: 7 ) He did not editorialize himself. Why do we sensor Him ? His mouth is not closed just because His book went to press. Show more Show less

Do Mormons practice polygamy?

Glenn Shields
The core issue: Let's remember that half of the Bible (yours and mine), was written by polygamists ! If polygamy was 'always' wrong, why did the Lord have half of the Bible wirtten by polygamists ? Why do people: honor the laws given by the polygamist Moses ? Sing the songs of the polygamist David ? Bask in the wisdom of the polygamist Solomon ? Pray to be taken to the gates upon which are the twelve names of the polygamist Jacob ? And into the bosom of the polygamist Abraham ? Yet curse the polygamist Brigham Young ? My wife comes from a polygamist family background on one side of the family. In reading the family journals, this was no easy lifestyle. The married male had to be in good standing and approved by church authorities to practice such; have his wife not only approve, but be involved in the selection process; and he must be able to financially support any additional family. In frontier America that was very difficult. We believe this was a directive of the Lord at the time, inasmuch as there were substantial numbers of females vs. males. Keep in mind, at the time there was no law against such a practice. However, when the Edmunds-Tucker Act was passed in 1890, this practice was immediately abolished (over 121 years ago - as of 2011). Everyone was very happy when it was over ! Show more Show less

What blessings can you receive from reading the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and other scriptures?

Glenn Shields
No matter what your religious preference, reading the Book of Mormon along with your study of the Holy Bible, will give you a deeper understanding of your personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It helps to clarify many things in the Bible, and will verify to you that the Bible is indeed true ! It will also help you to be a better teacher of the doctrines of Jesus Christ. I cannot think of a better reference study guide to the Bible, than the Book of Mormon. As a Christian, it is hard for me to believe that all Christians would not want to have a 2nd, or 3rd, or 4th witness of the truths is the Bible. Even enough to fill a little red wagon ! Additional witnesses of Jesus Christ, His Atonement, Resurrection, and Gospel Plan of Salvation. We believe in Christ, we teach of Christ, we testify of Christ. We honor and respect those who God calls as His spokesmen on the earth - living Apostles and Prophets. They however, mean nothing to us unless they bring us to Christ. Joseph Smith means nothing to us unless he brings us to Christ ! We honor him and respect him as we do the prophets of old, because he does bring us to Christ ! That was his mission !
