Hi I'm Cecily

I run marathons. I am a folklorist. I create inspiring videos for teenagers. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

For me, the best way to start my day is to wake up early, slip my running shoes on and race to my heart's content. I couldn't imagine any run more beautiful than in the mountains near my Utah home until I served a full-time Mormon mission in the Alps. I still miss the mountains and the breathtaking view of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but what I miss the most are the people there. I hope I can go back to study or visit and bring my running shoes with me. I love to write. I love writing nonfiction and poetry. Right now, I'm working on a folkloric study of medieval pilgrimage. I have a Masters in English literature, writing, and folklore in a few months. I also like 18th and 19th century literature. If you ever need someone to discuss Richardson's Pamela, Austen's Emma, or Bronte's Jane Eyre with, let me know! A few years ago, I had the chance to study in London. Seeing where Samuel Johnson, T. S. Elliot, and James Barrie wrote was life-changing. The relationships I have with family and friends has made life meaningful for me. I am a friend that likes to sit and talk. I like to listen, smile and laugh. I also love old movies, swimming, hiking, playing games, playing the piano and organ, and singing. I am a newlywed and love spending time with my handsome historian husband. He is an amazing man. La vita e bella!

Why I am a Mormon

Each of us go through crises. I have had a few of my own. It's easy to feel that I am all alone and that no one understands. It's terrible. One dark night years ago, I turned to God and asked if He was there and if He was listening to me cry. I will always remember that moment. A powerful peace came over me. I can't explain it with logic or with secular understanding. I could not have brought that feeling upon myself. I know that it came from God, that He was listening, He did care, and He knew how I felt. I know that He is there now. I love what Henry Longfellow said: "God is not dead nor doth He sleep." He loves each of us because we are His children. If you ask Him with a sincere heart to know if He is there, He will answer you. Throughout my life, I have remembered that moment. When times get hard, I turn to God. He knows me much better than I do; He knows what I need and how I can become better. Prayer works!

How I live my faith

I have always loved music. Now, I help my congregation with choosing the music that we sing. Singing is another way to pray to God. I pray and ask what my friends in my congregation need to hear, because certain songs can touch the heart of someone that needs it. I know that from personal experience. One day, I was thinking about someone that had hurt me. I wondered why they did what they did, and I didn't know what to do. We sang a song in Church that day, and one verse read, "Who am I to judge another / When I walk imperfectly?/ In the quiet heart is hidden / Sorrow that the eye can't see." I realized that she was going through pain and sorrow of her own. Although I couldn't understand how she was feeling, I knew that God knew, and my job was to forgive. Now, choosing the music and playing the piano and organ for my ward brings me joy, because I know that music can bless others the way it has blessed me.
