Hi I'm Janel

I grew up in Seattle. I love to sew my own clothes and I'm passionate about choral music. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in the Seattle area and loved everything about the Pacific Northwest- the ocean, the mountains, the trees, the culture. I'm taking a break from college right now but when I get back I'll be pursuing my degree in Music Education, with intent to become a choir director. I believe that music is for everyone, and that making it together can be one of the most powerful unifying and learning experiences we can have. I believe that many of life's problems can be solved by cookies. I love making things, from clothes to music to food, and my glue gun is the best eleven bucks I've ever spent. I like books that are funny or thought-provoking or interesting, and I hate books that are boring or didactic. Thus, I'm kind of a comic-book nerd.

Why I am a Mormon

My family have been members of the LDS church for generations. I've attended weekly services and participated in lots of different kinds of activities on the regular, throughout my entire life. But no one can rely solely on tradition or the faith of their parents to carry them through life. As a teenager, I came to know for myself that the Book of Mormon was true by reading it and praying to know what God thought about it, and whether it came from Him or not. As I sat in my room, an awkward 14 year-old girl, I realized that it was a boy my own age named Joseph Smith who had prayed to know what church to join, and Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ really came to him and directed him in translating the Book of Mormon, and in restoring the full gospel of Jesus Christ on the earth today. Knowing that Jesus Christ is at the helm of this ship, guiding the prophet and the people on the earth today, means everything to me. It means I can make decisions based on something real instead of on nothing. It means I know where I came from, what I'm supposed to be doing here, and where I'm headed in the future.

How I live my faith

A big part of living my faith is trying to be a friend to the people around me. I try to be kind and help other people, because I know that's what Jesus did when He was on the earth, and what He'd be doing if He were here today. I also participate in activities with my congregation, including social activities like potlucks or Halloween parties, or service projects, like planting trees or organizing food drives. I have led our choir, and also coordinated Visiting Teaching, which is a women's organization that fosters friendship and ensures that the needs of each individual are met. I also served as a missionary in the Michigan Lansing area, trying to help other people gain the blessings I've felt in my life from the gospel of Jesus Christ.
