Hi I'm Shayne

I am a devoted father and husband. I sing as an expression of my faith and of myself. I work in the tech sector. And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a father. I know it's a big responsibility. Someone's got to do it, and, in my family at least, that someone is me. I take my calling (and I do view it as a calling) very seriously and strive to do the best I can by my wife and daughter. I'm a singer. I love to sing both secular and sacred music. The sound of a hundred voices joining together perfectly in a common effort is one of life's pleasures; being part of that sound is one of life's greatest thrills. I truly believe that the experience of singing is a singularly spiritual one. I'm a learner. I'm a computer scientist by trade, but programming isn't the apex of my interests. I love seeing God's hand in the world and learning about the principles by which it operates. Whether reading books (mathematics and physics are pet topics), or exploring nature with my little daughter, finding truth wherever it lies is a passion.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up in a Mormon home, so my parents taught me young the values that I still believe today. As I've grown older and made my way through life, the principles I learned as a kid keep coming home to me in new ways. My schooling, my marriage, my family, and even my job have all given me experiences that have personally shown me the truth of what I learned young. Life truly has become a long stretch of learning. I am grateful for the knowledge that God has a plan for me, and for my family; this knowledge gives me a perspective that helps me place my priorities firmly in order. The knowledge that we will be resurrected and live forever also means I don't have to learn everything now. I don't have all the answers, but I know enough for now, and I know that God will take care of me as I move forward.

How I live my faith

I am lucky enough to use my musical talents with the kids in our local ward. During our meetings every Sunday, I get some time to teach them songs about the Gospel and the simple truths of God and our religion. I also get to teach them about music, something I absolutely love. If children get more excited about singing because I'm excited about it, I think I've succeeded. If children learn simple truths through music, as I have, I think I've made a slam dunk. I also stand up as an example to my friends and neighbors of the joy of having a family. In a day when many of my peers eschew familial or marital ties as "restricting", I am proud to show that I find my life enriched and given meaning by the bonds I have with my family. My friends and co-workers know that I love and find purpose in my family.
