Hi I'm Derek

I'm a married father with four busy kids. I'm a global business manager for a Fortune 500 IT company. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was born and raised in East Idaho. After high school, I received a mission call to the Washington Tacoma Mission. After my missionary service I attended school and married my wife in the Boise Idaho Temple. During college I had the opportunity to work as a speaker and counselor in the EFY program and as a trainer at the MTC. Both experiences were incredible opportunities for me to grow and help the youth of the Church come towards Christ. I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in business and in turn completed a Master's degree in business. My wife and I have four children (each child is two years older than the next sibling in line). The young kids make for an exciting and action packed home. Today I work as a global business manager for a Fortune 500 company. When I'm not working, or spending tiem with my family; my hobbies include being outdoors, participating in sports (particularly triathlon) and following BYU sports.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised in an LDS home. Our family attended church weekly and participated in church activities. I was baptized at the age of 8. Our family read the scriptures and prayed daily. l served as a missionary in the Washington Tacoma Mission. During my missionary service I grew up in more than one way. I matured and developed a personal relationship with my Savior Jesus Christ. I learned through countless experiences that prayers are answered. I learned that faith is a powerful principle. I learned that living the principles of the gospel created peace in my life. Since my missionary service, I have learned that as I focus my life on the Savior, I am a better person. My testimony is based on the doctrine of "by their fruits shall ye know them". When I live the principles of the gospel, my relationship with Jesus Christ is strengthened. When I read the scriptures, I literally feel as if I'm putting on the armor of God and my ability to resist temptation is greater. I love the Book of Mormon and the New Testament in particular. As I mentioned earlier, I believe in the power of prayer. I believe that my Father in Heaven loves me unconditionally, cares for me and rejoices when I make good choices. I know he wants to bless me and wants me to be happy. My Father in Heaven has sent Jesus Christ to save me. I also know my Father in Heaven has sent Jesus Christ to set an example for me as to how I should live and interact with others. I know that Jesus Christ lives and is my advocate with my Father in Heaven. I have a testimony that my Father in Heaven answers prayers and provides inspiration and truth through the Holy Ghost. I know that as I follow Christ and trust in him--I'm blessed both spiritually and temporally. I'm a better husband and father. I'm a better manager at work. I'm a better person holistically. I know that I belong to a Church that Christ is the head of. I know because I have asked God in prayer and in turn, received his witness of its truth.

How I live my faith

My faith plays a significant role in almost every aspect of my life. As a husband, my wife and I pray together daily and ask the Lord to bless us in the decisions we make as parents to our children and as partners to each other. As parents, we are striving to teach our children the importance of having a Christ centered life. We pray daily as a family. We set aside one night each week where we spend time as a family with an emphasis on growing spiritually and emotionally together. We attend church meetings and activities as a family. I have a one-on-one interview with each child monthly. I use the time to understand my children. I want to know what concerns they have and what is going on in their life. It is a chance to tell them of my love for them and remind them that they are never alone. I get to share with them how important they are in our family. I love setting goals with my kids, and I pray with them. Each month I follow up on our previous conversations and commitments. Before work each day, I pray for guidance. I will read from the scriptures daily in an effort to put on the armor of God and ensure my mind is clear. I try to conduct myself at work with integrity and honesty. I treat those I work with and those who work for me with respect and trust. My goal is for our teams and organizations to be successful and I hope that I carry myself as a true disciple of Jesus Christ. I have completed 3 Ironman 70.3 races, and I have 3 Ironman races planned for next year one of them will be my first full Ironman distance race. I'm training for these races with other members of my church. Despite the high training volumes required to prepare for these races--my friends and I are able find balance through our shared values and commitment to family first. During my training and cycling workouts, I will often listen to music and messages focused on Christ. I'm able to enjoy my hobby while strengthening my testimony.
