Hi I'm Laura

Someday I'm going to hike the Appalachian Trail. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have the best job in the world. I am a mom to my five children. I studied mathematics in college, which actually helps sometimes with the raising of children! Why? Believe it or not, I learned to be creative as I studied math. As I spent day after day learning to prove math theorems, I developed the ability to try different approaches to solve complex problems. When something didn't work, I had to try new avenues, which often required creativity and open-mindedness -- some valuable life skills! I love math and plan to return to teaching at some point. Right now I am enjoying the challenge of raising children in a deliberate way. . . and its many and varied and bounteous rewards. We love hiking. Yosemite is a favorite spot. I think I could visit there every year and never tire of it. The best thing about backpacking as a family? Distractions are left behind. You talk, you walk and you look up and there is the evidence of God's majesty before you.

Why I am a Mormon

Happiness comes through living in a Christ-like way. Charity, humility, kindness are the attributes of a happy person. I know this is true. So many people in my life have been examples to me of Christ-like living . . . Mormon and non-Mormon. I believe Heavenly Father sent his Son to earth to redeem mankind. Centering our lives on Jesus Christ brings joy now and after we die. I also believe Heavenly Father communicates to us through prayer, through holy scripture and through prophets whom He calls. I love the Book of Mormon and the New Testament especially. The New Testament is the ultimate "primary source." You want to know Christ's gospel? Here are His words. Here are His actions. The Book of Mormon is a continuous testament to the divinity of Jesus Christ. It is filled with stories of real people, and is woven with a thread that returns again and again to the mission of our Savior. The message of the Book of Mormon? God loves us and because of that love, enables us to grow through obedience to His commandments. Life is full of trials and difficulties. Hope comes through obedience to divine commandments. God is merciful and through His Son provides a way to overcome trials, a way to learn and develop and return to God.

How I live my faith

I am a local leader in the women's organization of the church. Some of our recent projects include providing dinners throughout the year to a shelter for homeless men and making quilts for an organization that help victims of domestic violence start new lives. People's lives are busy. But whatever pockets of time we do have, if we fill those pockets with service to others in need, we are happier and our lives are enriched. In all of my years in the church, I have been a witness to this principle.
