Hi I'm Duane

I'm a scuba diver, a linguist, a computer industry consultant, an inventor, an entrepreneur, a husband, and a dad. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My family moved around a lot when I was growing up, from southern California, to northern Kentucky, to eastern Washington state, to southwestern Idaho, to the San Francisco Bay Area of California, and back to Idaho. There was so much to learn about and from all the wonderful people I met along the way, including their varied lifestyles and beliefs. I still love the variety that going to new places and meeting new people brings to my life. Probably because of my eclectic youth, I have a variety of interests, including scuba diving, ballroom dancing, model rocketry, and history. My latest adventure is applying for a new technology patent and starting my own business.

Why I am a Mormon

Throughout my life, opportunities to explore many religious ideas and philosophies as well as non-religious lifestyles have been readily available to me. Along with many religious friends, I know many people who describe themselves as atheists or agnostics, and many who believe in a supreme being but who don't believe in "organized religion." There's also been an almost endless stream of folks who have explained to me why they think the Mormons can't possibly be right. I've explored all of their reasoning and doubts, some to great lengths. So why, after all of that, am I a Mormon? Well, there are many reasons, really. From a logical point of view, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only church that can answer all the questions. It's the only church, Christian or otherwise, that has the same foundation as the church Christ himself organized, with modern-day apostles and prophets. From a practical viewpoint, its teachings have made me healthy, happy, and prosperous. I have no addictions, I never have to look back over my shoulder, and I can go to sleep each night peacefully knowing my conscience is clear of intentional offense towards others (that's not to say I think I'm perfect, though). Truth is my friend and I am truly free to choose, despite what many claim amounts to too much control and too many rules. The best reason of all, however, isn't any of these. It gets better. I learned that omniscient, omnipotent God is literally my Father in Heaven and that He answers prayer. He has promised to every one that seeks and asks with sincere, honest intent, willing to accept the answer--whatever it may be--with a truly open mind and heart that He will reveal truth individually, powerfully, and undeniably: "By the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things." I reasoned, "What have I got to lose?" I asked God. He replied. I can tell you without a doubt that God is real and that He always keeps His promises.

How I live my faith

I have had many opportunities to serve in the Church that include working with adults, youth, and children. Currently, I help others research their own genealogy which is both rewarding and fascinating. Most importantly, however, I have learned that faith is a principle of action for positive change and improvement, both for myself as well as for those around me. I have a personal goal to influence others for good, as individuals and as a community, by applying the principles of the gospel of Christ.
